their lack of respect for Gustav is getting pretty publicized. that'll catch wind and spread to the residents of new orleans. peter the wolf is howling... if storm H or I head their way i'm not too sure people will be as willing to leave.

they all know katrina.. have seen a few scares since then, but nothing of her magnitude. i'm willing to bet a lot of those folks are gonna realize it was a once in a lifetime storm for them.

will they leave next time? how many false alarms until people start ignoring the mandatory warnings?

Because of the levee system protecting the below sealevel city, every time a moderate sized hurricane threatens the area, the city will have to be completely evacuated. The cost of this must be enormous. It may be that the residents may feel the prognosticators are crying wolf, but I don't see how people could consider riding out a storm there any more after the levees failed once. Those levees could fail again.
This isn't like Galveston, with a seawall and city raised 12-15 feet above sealevel.
Any minor storm could cause one of those levees to fail again in New Orleans. It's not the ideal situation.

I have relatives in the Montegut / Houma area. They had their **** torn up. Church's lost their roof. Some streets left pristine, the next one every house with a tree in its yard or on its roof.

Remember Alecia back in the early 80's? That's what just happened to Houma and Montegut and Cocodrie. Nothing compared to rita or Katrina, but nasty in its own right.

It is all just a big coup to clear out the city. While everyone is gone, the Geek Squad will go reclaim all the Plasma TV's that were looted during Katrina.

The point of landfall 30 miles one way or the other can also have a HUGE impact on the level of devastation in New Orleans even at a Cat 2. Hurricanes don't always follow the projected path. They did the right thing.

Also, no sooner than they uttered the phrased "dodged a bullet" all hell broke loose from Katrina.

waldo, i wouldn't dare call it a false alarm, but a lot of folks down there in new orleans aren't the brightest crayons in the box. i was listening to some returning residents who were thankful the city was spared and then there were others that mentioned chances so unlikely for another katrina that they're not gonna get on another cramped bus just to get out of a city in a storm's projected path.

seeing all those people line up to get in a bus looked like hell. i sure as hell wouldn't want to get back on one of those buses. some will because they respect the threat. others will not.

Unfortunately, New Orleans may have to evacuate again with Ike. Should know by tomorrow or Monday.

More likely, H town.

dont worry

there will be 755 reporters from every news station in the country all standing in 100 mph winds showing us that, yes, there is a hurricane blowing....

meanwhile the news staffs sit there with their fingers crossed hoping a levy break.

i'd rather ike katrina new orleans than hit houston and f our **** up.
