A hornfan releases a record

Hey, Guys--

My name is Paul Wesley and I'd just like to let everybody know that this hornfans veteran is releasing a record this week. It has a ton of Austin's best studio musicians on it: Tosca Strings, Grooveline Horns, Bruce Robison, Warren Hood, George Reiff, Bukka Allen, and many, many more.

The record, titled "When I Let Go," was over two full years in the making. I was extremely fortunate to get the attention of my "dream" mix engineer- Kevin Killen, who mixed U2's "Unforgettable Fire," Peter Gabriel's "So," and a lot more great records. It was mastered at Sterling Sound by Greg Calbi ("Born to Run," "Graceland," etc.).

You can hear some of the mixes at my website: The Link . The music is melodic rock with songwriter sensibilities-- I think Counting Crows or Wallflowers would be reasonable comparisons, though my record has more gospel elements than those bands (lots of B3 organ and a choir). The website has links to myspace and facebook pages. I would really appreciate it if you could take the time to join. I am very respectful with the frequency of updates that I send on those sites, btw.

Even better, stop by Waterloo Records in the next couple weeks and pick up a copy. My official record release date is Tuesday the 31st, but a little birdie tells me that it's on the shelf today. Yeah, it's also on iTunes, but the artwork is kickass and I think Waterloo is gonna have the disc for only a couple dollars more than iTunes.

The record even has a strong hornfans influence. Our very own jimmyjazz (once and future audio engineer) served as a consultant/beta tester as the rough mixes took shape. Also, through this site, I was put in touch with a few members of a certain University marching band (drummers). You can hear their work in the bridge of the song, "The Wait."

I have a CD release show at the Cactus on April 14, and I am playing Saxon Pub the last Saturday in April. If you make it out to a show, stop by and say "hi" and I'll buy you a drink!

Sincere thanks for listening!
Paul

I had to google the "life in the minors" reference to understand what that was.

Maduro, pm me and I will get you .wavs.

Thanks to all for the well wishes. If anyone is working on a record, I have a hell of an email list of Austin musicians, engineers, and studios. Would be happy to try to help out.

Paul

Just saw this . . . sorry, Paul, I've been a bit out of the loop. I could have chimed in sooner.

While I might have offered a little advice here and there on Paul's album, it was bound for greatness regardless of any outside influence. For one thing, his co-conspirators were absolutely first rate -- from the session musicians and the engineers on through mixing and mastering.

But more than that, the beauty of this album is the material. Paul would have had to try very hard to actually **** it up. It's first rate songwriting accompanied by first rate performances, and that's a tough combination to beat.

It's pop, but it's not at all saccharine. You'll hear a little country, a little roots, and a little gospel, but it remains an "Austin album", without sounding like anyone I know in town.

Buy this CD.

I will definitely try to check it out.

Good luck with your musical career.

edit: listening to it now. you have a really good singing voice.

Jimmyjazz-- Thanks for that nice endorsement! Your critques were really helpful!

UTbone-- I think Carlos and the gang finished the horn parts around late '07 or early '08. Those guys have a great ear for countermelodies that complement the vocal or soloist. On one song in particular, I played a little melody on keyboards when I gave them the rough tracks, and said, "I think the horn part should go something like this." When they gave it back to me, their part was different from what I had suggested... and WAY cooler (that was on the opening track, "Evangeline").

I traded emails with Carlos a few weeks ago, and they were touring the world (literally) with Jason Mraz. I think they were in Hong Kong at the time. They deserve all the success that comes their way.

I just got word yesterday that I'll be doing the Fox TV morning show on Monday. I think it's called "Good Morning Austin." We'll play between 7:30 and 8:00, I'm told. I should give a quick Hornfans "hook 'em" salute before the first song starts (or maybe a Ronnie James Dio devil's horns).

Oh, if any of you guys know how to DVR something and turn it into a file that I can post online, PM me.
