A Helping Hand

The History of Longhorn Sports through 2014
At 4:00 a.m. on April 14, 2023, TLSN posted volume VIII newsletter #9, and by 5:00 a.m., a Longhorn swimmer texted me saying that the newsletter did not mention the women’s and men’s success in swimming and diving. So line list #8, #9, and #10 below address that oversight.
Over the last 18 months, The Texas Longhorn sports brand has been the dictionary definition of an elite collegiate sports program, with 11 different Longhorn teams reaching noble status.
1. Women's basketball: Elite Eight (2022)
2. Women's tennis: NCAA champions (2022)
3. Softball: NCAA runner-up (2022)
4. Baseball: College World Series (2022)
5. Volleyball: National champions (2022)
6. Men's basketball: Elite Eight (2023)
7. Rowing: National Champion (2023)
8. Women’s swimming and diving – runner-up to National champion in 2023
9. Men’s swimming and diving was second nationally in 2022
10. Men’s swimming and diving ranked 3rd nationally in 2023.
11. Men’s golf was National Champion (2022)

Now if the football team and coaches can perform up to their impressive resume’ of Intellect, knowledge, and wisdom in 2023, nirvana is near.

Three hours after the TLSN Newsletter was posted, at 7:00 a.m. I underwent a 2.5-hour surgery to correct some lower back issues.

A 5-star surgical experience.
I am no stranger to hospital surgery. I have had many. One surgery at Mayo when I was 55 lasted 8 hours. Now at 74, the pain of losing my father during a hospital stay when he was 80 weighed heavy on my heart. My worry genes were working overtime a week before the surgery.

I was terrified as I was rolled into the cold, sterile, impersonal confines of the surgery room when a warm hand from a St. David’s caregiver expectantly settled close to my heart. The warmth resonating from her touch was profound.
Seeking further confirmation that I was not alone on this journey, I reached out and touched the hand of the anesthesiologist. Her reassuring grip confirmed I was not alone.
To me, both “touches” confirmed that hands are the most important conduit to the soul. With this revelation, tears began to flow, my body began to shake uncontrollably, and then there was silence.

The Hospital Questionnaire
Three days after the surgery, I was released to the at-home rehab service - Capitol Home Health. The next day I received a knock on my email door requesting I complete the ubiquitous questionnaire that follows all hospital stays. In general, when I am pleased with a service, I don’t complete this form, but on this occasion, I was determined to complete the questionnaire to celebrate the masterpiece art form exhibited between surgical teams, Hospital caregivers, and the rehab facility.
The timing was right! Legally prescribed drugs, a great surgeon, a great hospital with exceptional care, and rehab, when needed, recharged my battery and gave me a little more time to share the passion of the TLSN Board members Benny Pace, Sherryl Hauglum, Beth Coblentz, Jim Kay, and Billy Dale to
offer a helping hand to qualifying Longhorn former student-athletes, trainers, managers, support staff, and their immediate families, and to chronicle the history of Longhorn sports as told through the eyes of those who created the Longhorn brand.

At those times of stress the act of compassion, an act as simple as a touch of a caring hand, can bring the most emotional relief one can imagine. Hoping for a complete recovery Billy.
