a friend of mine died drunk-driving last night

the manager of the bar/restaurant that I frequent.

Really nice guy. with kids. Finished his shift and hung around last night drinking. He was shitfaced. I asked if he was driving and he said he was sleeping on the couch in his office. I left around 10 PM.

This afternoon I stop in for a cold one after work, and everyone is quiet and somber. The bartender comes over looking horrible (and she's a hottie) and says "Will...did you hear?"

She was working last night when he and I were on adjoining barstools. She says that when they were closing at 2:45, they turned around and he was gone. She said that she kept trying his cell and he didn't answer. When her phone rang early this morning, she said she didn't want to answer because she had a feeling it was bad news.

42 years old. Kids.

****.

the only good news...it was a single-car accident. He didn't hurt anyone else.

Oh, Will, I'm so sorry about your friend. The arrogance that comes with drinking is amazing -- I know because I've been too arrogant to admit that I needed a ride. I've just been lucky.

I'm sorry for your loss. I, of course, feel bad for you and for him but can't imagine the loss for his family. Please, people, don't drink and drive.

I lost a friend to a drunk driver so I sort of know how you feel with your loss. I had to go pick his fiancee up at the airport instead of him and let her know he died about 4 hours earlier. The wedding scheduled for 2 months later was not to be.

I have never had anybody I know drink and drive then die but sadly had other friends die at the hands of one. Glad he did not hurt anybody else. if just one person who knew him learns a lesson and does not ever drink and drive again, EVER, then there is some good that can come of it.

Count me among the grateful and lucky that my stupid behavior in younger days didn't result in any tragedies. It easily could have, on multiple occasions. Best wishes to your friend's family.

Speaking from my own experiences I can never figure out what is so hard about calling a cab or someone to come get you/me. BW, sorry about your loss, it is tragic for his family.

I lost my best friend in 2001 in a drunk driving accident. He hit a family of four head on. Thankfully they all survived. Unfortunately, he didn't.

Driving drunk is truly a selfish act. Sorry to hear this Will.

Sorry for your loss, but glad he didn't kill anybody else.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for people who drive drunk.

Sorry for your loss. Glad he nobody else was injured or killed. Stories like this really give us all a lesson to learn from.
