In watching this AAU tourney in Carrolton, I saw a few things that I thought were worth mentioning.
First, a new team that I began watching and fell in love with was this team out of Austin called the Austin Ice which would routinely be laying the ball up 3 seconds after the other team just scored. Austin Ice had a big man that intrigued me not because he was a center prospect for Texas, but because of how big and agile he was for his size. Come to find out this big man is Quincy Russell. I was never too big on Russell but after watching him this weekend and seeing how the athleticism could translate to the gridiron, he is definitely a must-have.
Secondly I watched Texas commit Sheldon McClellan and he definitely impressed. The big showdown was McClellan and his Houston Select team against the Dallas Mustangs led by LeBryan Nash. Nash is ranked #4 nationally by Rivals and #1 in the state by Texashoops. McClellan is ranked #55 by Rivals and #2 in the state by Texashoops. Texasroundball ranks McClellan as the #1 player in the state regardless of class(including 2010 recruits Perry Jones, Tony Mitchell, Cameron Clark & Phil Pressey) also ranks Nash the #8 player in the state for 2011. Roundball can be hit or miss as they were the only site to rank Durant over Oden in 2006 but also felt Donald Sloan, Byron Eaton and Curtis Jerrels were better players than DJ Augustin. Roundball isn't that big on Cory Joseph but feel that Kabongo is easily the best guard UT will have signed since Ford.
Now back to the showdown, many people showed up to see who was the best player in the state. Although Nash's team won the game, McClellan finished with 29pts and at least 5asts while Nash finished with 10pts and a technical. Simply put no one could do anything defensively with McClellan as his vision, creativity, ball-handling, passing and shooting was a sight to behold. I can't really think of any former Texas player to compare him to but he will definitely be the most complete 2 guard offensively Texas has ever had the moment he steps on campus. The only fear with McClellan is that he doesn't play hard all the time and he may not respond to Barnes' antics very well, but he is definitely an elite talent.
