A Day in Fort Worth

The gf is coming to visit me in Dallas for the weekend. I'm planning on taking her to Fort Worth for the day on Saturday. I want to go to the zoo and stop by the Kimbell. I was also thinking about doing dinner while we're there, and wanted some recommendations. I'm not looking to go too expensive (not a Grady Spears-type place), although I wouldn't mind some nicer options. But I'd be just as happy with a good Tex Mex place (and so would she, since she currently lives in the Midwest). I know Joe T. Garcia's, but I read some recent reviews online that aren't so great. I know there's a ton of restaurants in Sundance Square, but don't know much about any of them (except the Flying Saucer).

Well, if you like golf, the Colonial will be going on this weekend. That also means that the popular restaurants will be packed. Joe T's is good, not great - people go for the atmosphere (which is kick ***) and the drinks; the food is so-so. Reata and Lonesome Dove are great restaurants, with a Fort Worth flair (think western chic). Lonesome Dove is in the stockyards and would allow you to walk around there a bit. Reata is in Sundance Square.

You will want to make reservations at either one of those restaurants this weekend. Check out guidelive (link below) for reviews. Reata has a kickass roof-top bar that overlooks downtown & Sundance Square.

Zoo is great, so is the Kimbell. You may want to check out the Modern as well.

What a perfect post, I came here to llok for recommendations in FW as I am planning to go there for a Friday Saturday night.

My recommendations needed would be places to stay, perhaps with a spa, things to do, and places to eat.

Not trying to hijack your thread but no reason to start another FW post in parallel...

Yep..remember the Colonial is going on this weekend and it is located just down from the Zoo. Given this, traffic will be crazy on University..

You can hit the Kimbell without running into Colonial traffic, but the zoo will be tough. To skip Colonial traffic, don't take 30 from Dallas all the way to University. Instead, exit I-30 at Henderson or Summit/8th and go north to 7th street, then take 7th west over to the museum district, which is just past the huge intersection of 7th & University.

You can hit the Kimbell and the Modern.

Restaurants in the area include: La Familia for Mexican (Foch St at 7th), Gloria's in the bottom floor of Montgomery Plaza between the museums and downtown (Mexican-El Salvadoran Dallas chain), Angelo's on White Settlement east of University (AWESOME bbq). Joe T's and Chimy's are in the general area if you're more interested in boozing up on margaritas than the food.

You could always go to the Stockyards, but personally I find it to be the most overrated part of Fort Worth. Downtown pwns the Stockyards.

Once it cools down a little near sunset, the Pour House patio in downtown, near Sundance Square is a good spot. Downtown should be pretty happening with the Colonial in town. From the Pour House patio you should be able to see where some of the action is.

Perfect Touch Spa is a good one that we use. As far as hotels go, the best ones are the Ashton & the Worthington downtown. It will be pretty tough to get a room this weekend though. Downtown was really packed last night - Cory Morrow was playing at 8.0's & the FW Opera is going on at Bass Hall (that's another thing to do downtown - the FW Opera).

I'm not there like Mustang, but the weather does not look good for the Colonial. I guess a plate of gator tail at Razoo's won't get it done? Take her to Mi Cocina and get her a Mambo Taxi.

Yeah there is a good chance of rain all weekend. Mi Cocina downtown is also good. I ate there last night and saw Cory Morrow at 8.0's. The mambo taxis are hurting me today.

Around the Kimbell, there's Bella Italia and Lucille's on Camp Bowie, and Sardine's on University. For Tex-Mex around there is Dos Gringos on University; I haven't eaten there in 15 years, but if it's still there, it can't be that bad. For barbecue, I second (and third, and fourth...) Angelo's.

If you all go out late downtown and need some soberin' up food, the place to go is Ol' South at University and I-30. With the Colonial in town, the crowd should be more eclectic than usual.

I visited Fort Worth last year with one purpose - to visit the Modern Art Musuem. Believe it or not, but the FW Modern is one of the finest examples of modern architecture in the world. I left FW with a very good impression. I always just assumed it was a cow-town. Downtown was a lot of fun...

We still call it Cowtown so people who don't know better will stay away and won't come in here and ruin it.

I haven't been to Bass Hall in forever. Me and an ex-GF used to have season tickets for the musicals. I used to love driving out there for dinner and a show.

Need to start doing that again.
