I'm a 3rd grade teacher, and today we were talking about different ways to measure lengths using the standard units. When we got to yards I had my students brainstorm things that could be measured using yards, and after dropping some large hints, they came up with a football field. I then showed them Ricky's run, and told them to listen to the announcer to see if he said anything about yards. Of course they picked up that he needed 11 yards, and at the end they heard the run had been 60 yards.
The funniest part was seeing their reaction when he scored the touchdown. You would have thought they were watching it live (of course none of them were alive when it happened). They all erupted in cheer and were yelling "Go Longhorns!" It was pretty cute.
