Coming from Austin, should I take I-10 in or go 290 and come down Hwy 6?

From 290 - if you take 6 south, it's red lights and crowded. If you take 10 in, you'll skip that part. Take the direct route on 10.

What hollisdude said. Taking 6 from 290 to 10 at 8:00 will take at least 45 minutes if not an hour.

def take 10 - the traffic in houston doesn't get bad before (west of) hwy 6, mostly the traffic is east of there.
