85 + -?

Anybody here count the number of scholarships lately?
Used to be easier, when they had a mark by the walkons.
I wonder if that had any influence on the recent removals.
I would think that most if not all were deserved, but they might have came like they did if there were only 72 ships at the time.

My understanding is that UT was within the scholarship limit of 85 for this fall if you don't count Kendall Thompson who left the team for medical reasons (concussions) and Kevin Shorter, the incoming freshman who had a spinal cord injury his senior year of high school, both of whom I believe will be on medical scholarship now. With Sanders and Meander being arrested and suspended and Collins, Bergeron and Overstreet dismissed for repeatedly breaking team rules, I think that puts UT at 80 scholarship players at this point.

A quick count from the current Texas sports roster gave me 81 on scholarship which includes walk-ons DS Boyer and PK Rose and the guys still working to get back in good graces (Josh Turner, Daje Johnson and Desmond Harrison).

Kevin Shorter is no longer listed on the roster.

Strong indicated at a press conference that Sanders and Meander not on the team and would not return.

Did anyone interpret his comments differently?

This "official website" on quick perusal, does not list Sanders, Meander, Collins, Overstreet, Bergeron, K. Thompson, or Shorter. But it also does not say whether a player is on scholarship or not.

This unofficial website on quick perusal, does not list Sanders, Meander, Collins, Overstreet, Bergeron or K. Thompson. This list does indicate whether or not a player is on scholarship and does list the incoming freshman Shorter as a scholarship player. As near as I can count that's 81 with Shorter and 80 without. The column on the right is for verbal commitments not due in until next year.

Kevin Shorter is on medical scholarship according to this article which, by my shaky reckoning, puts the players on scholarship at 80.

Thanks for the link to the class breakdown chart.

Your quick perusal is most likely better than my quick count which took 4 countings to get 81 twice. My head was spinning by that time; trying to count and remember who was on scholarship.

I think the difference in our numbers involves Nick Rose who got a scholarship last year but that does not mean he has one this year.

I wonder if other walk-ons will get a scholarship for this season. Most likely is DB Dylan Haines who is apparently pushing some of the scholarship athletes.

The interesting effect of the housecleaning may show up next Spring where there is now room for a few more recruits to fill the scholarship spots recently vacated. Looks like LB and TE positions need some shoring up

Yes, probably if you are counting Nick Rose, then that is where we differ. My second link says he is not on scholarship, so I was leaving him off. Rose was just named starting FG kicker a couple of days ago so I guess if he didn't have a scholarship before, he will now.
