How many of these guys are Texas good?

Based on the early Fab 55 and other lists, we are settling like we are Texas Tech.

Someone help me understand if the coaching staff has all retired.

I'll help. You problem is that you have no clue.Who gives a crap what some newspaper or some list says. The coaches have probably seen tons of film on this kids and have seen them up close. I doubt that the same can be said for those who own the websites.

The fact that you nor any website has a kid listed is irrelevant. Those lists had the winningest QB in the history of college football as a 3 star who most posters thought would go elsewhere when the 5 star kid committed. And don't tell me that the coaches have made mistakes because every coach has. Many times coaches have to use their experience and their instincts in recruiting.

Quit the are ther Texas good whining and wait to see how they do when they get the chance to play.

Pretty obvious the ratings and rankings don't make a player. Alot can happen during their senior season. I think with the right teachers and coaches you can have a bunch of great players, I also feel alot of it is up to the player himself and how hard he works or doesn't work.

In fact there are few rankings even out yet and the least reliable is the fab55 and Burton and Howe will tell you that. They have not even finished evaluating many players. Mack Brown does not "settle". imo, to think we are doing so is silly. We have one of the top 3 qb's in the nation, the top OG in texas, the top WR in Texas, one of the top 3 DT's in Texas, etc.... and we likely land the #2WR in Texas and the #1 RB in the nation.

My impression is that the University of Texas football program has a lot more resources and expertise to judge talent than the AAS, Rivals or Scout. That said, highlight films arre up on the internet and it's pretty clear the linebackers who have verbaled with us aren't as dominant in the films as Derek David. Of course David plays at Rockdale and the other two are in big metroplex high schools.

We are not pursuing David right now. That is all I'll say on that.
imo Boyette is a major home run. Offers from a lot of major powerhouses like Bama, Fla State, ou, etc

Is there a link to player rankings for this class of 2012? I am not familiar with the names of many of these players and would like to see their ranking not that it matters since we have seen several 4-5 star players fail to develope .......guess that gives fans reason to doubt the ranking systems.

I'm kind of done with recruit rating systems. You can tell from day 1 in practice if a freshman has the motor to play NCAA football. It showed that some guys were obvious hits, like Colt and Sam Acho.

It also showed an "eh..." factor for plenty of 4-star guys over the last few years, particularly trench kids who grew up in a high school system with the same plays from 7th grade onward.

Here is the LSR 2012 list so far. Very early for any kind of rankings to be out. The recruiting services hadn't had their junior days and most of the school are just barely having theirs or haven't had theirs yet. So as mentioned it isn't significiant that Texas has only verballed 2 of the top 30 on this list, b/c this list can and will change.

What is significant to me is the large # of recruits taken thus far. I had thought Mack was going to wait longer going forward and try and not wrap up so much of his classes this early on. Hopefully he will take about 10 more and be very selective with those 10.

"Texas good" this is really arrogant and we need to stop saying it.

Conner Brewer isn't Texas good he's better, he's not from Texas and he's better than every QB in-state.

I made a list for you I think for the most part it is up to date. When you combine this with who we have left on radar with our impressive OOS offer list I think we will do fine. Not top 5 but pretty good, and certainly not bad for 5-7 and changing nearly every coach on roster.

Commits
Connor Brewer QB OOS better than every QB in Texas
Cayleb Jones WR best WR in state #2 LSR100, #13 FAB55, #4 Liucci44
Thomas Johnson WR top 3 state WR #11 LSR100, #6 FAB55, #10 Liucci44
Peter Jinkens LB top 3 state LB #21 LSR100, #23 FAB55, #17 Liucci44
Curtis Riser OL Top 5 state lineman #9 LSR100, #19 FAB55, #13 Liucci44
Camrhon Hughes OL top 5 state lineman #59 LSR100, #42 FAB55, #41 Liucci44
Orlando Thomas WR #64 LSR100, #19 FAB55, #37 Liucci44
Paul Boyette DT top two DT state DT #43 LSR100, #54 FAB55, #21 Liucci44
Hassan Ridgeway DE #40 LSR100
Caleb Bluiett DE #98 LSR100
Alex De La Torre LB # 39 LSR100, #38 FAB55
Bryson Echols - CB
Alex Norman DE #34 LSR100

I'm not a fan of "Texas good" either. I doubt it was typed with such arrogance. More likely meant, is he "get us back to at least 10 wins good"

Probably 90% of the players on the TCU roster were considered less than "Texas good" yet that team would kick the **** out of the Longhorns. Same for A&M and Baylor and both beat Texas.

Arrogance infected the program from the top down and caused the crash. The recruiting rankings mean nothing if the players arrive believing they have made it simply by receiving a scholarship. Expectations of effort and work must be ratcheted up several notches.

Hopefully Bluiett, Ridgeway, and Norman with great coaching can mold themselves into a Brain Robison type instead of the type that is forgotten in the pack.

I don't think it was arrogance per se.

I think 2010, like 2006, was simply the year after we got to the national championship game; after which the whole staff slacked off like a mother ******. THAT'S the entitlement problem. You can label that arrogance if you want to. Laurel resting more like.

If Mack focused solely on the ranking system, we probably never would have gone after Brian Robison, Derek Lokey, Roddrick Muckelroy or either of the Achos. They (like Colt) were all 3-stars (Rivals).

As mentioned earlier the ranking system isn't really fully fleshed out yet. There haven't been many junior days or camps yet and all of the schools and scouts haven't weighed in on who is better than who at least right now. So it is understandable if Texas takes a guy that is say #50 on the 2012 LSR but eventually is a top 15 prospect in state.

You can not make that point by using guys like Dawson, Neil, Brackens, and Dronett as they were all the top position players in Dave Campbell's respected rankings in the day. And yes they all exceeded even those high rankings on the field.
Kiki, Major, and Colt would be examples of those that were ranked in the bottom half of any top 100. Bottom line it is always less than 50/50 with the lower rated guys. Some current cases for example, will a Fitzhenry or Nkpowara show up? I am hoping to see something this spring or they will be lost in the shuffle.

^^^^^ I agree with your most recent post bishophorn. Your earlier post seemed to say that the best a mid tier guy could do is be a role player. And that is where I disagree. Some of these guys excel at the highest level. I've seen tons of workout wonders who rank high but but suck at football and I've seen tons of small guys who perform at all conference levels. Just because there might be something missing to keep a guy from the Top 20 in Texas doesn't mean that he can't be a star.

My definition of "Texas Good" : In February - Is expected to be a dynamic starter with high All-Conference Potential, If from OOS has All-American potential or fills a key need not represented by in-state players that year.

In Nov- Feb. - If not the above, fills a need and probably can start and perform well.

Recognizing that the sevices are guesses and less than accurate at this time of the year, we must relay on the coaches, but my CONCERN is that we seem to be filling up the class early with many (by no means a majority) guys who would probably still commit in January.

Agree Uninformed, we are both on the same page now. "Expert" recruit rankings and how they actually pan out once on our campus. Sadly I am old enough to remember watching all those players you mentioned play in High School and knew how they were rated even before the dawn of the "star" system given out now.
