620/2222 area

My sister and mother have convinced my husband and I that the "perfect apartment" for us is at a complex near this intersection. It's gotten decent reviews on Apartment Ratings and looks scenic from google mapping. I also found there is an HEB and a Target nearby, but aside from my limited google skills I don't know anything about this area. (We haven't seen it yet; we live in FL and are moving back in 2 months)

Anyone live there? Is it doable for a year or 2? I'm happy because we are close (enough) to Lake Travis, Emma Long park, Bull Creek park, and have 360 there to take us wherever. I'm just hoping the scenery is nice like it is on 360. Thoughts?

The only real issue with that area is traffic. If you won't have to be commuting into the City for anything then that should be fine. To get downtown from their during rush hour is probably about 45 - 60 minutes.

Yep. Depends on where you will work and how much traffic you are willing to sit in. There was an article in the Austin paper yesterday takling about how bad the traffic on 2222 is during rush hour.

I live in Steiner Ranch. The area is nice, and more shopping and restaurants are, for better or woese, going in. I can give you a full rundown on all the restaurants in the area if you'd like.
The commute varies. I work downtown, and we like to go into town to eat/play. On weekends, it's 20 minutes. In rush hour, barring a wreck or really bad weather, it's 30(best case)-45 minutes. Rarely does it take an hour unless something is wrong.
What apt complex are you talking about? I have some info on some of them in the area.

We read that article the day after putting our application in on the apartment. Perfect timing. Traffic's not so much of an issue for me because I work night shift and would be coming in close to the end of rush hour (barring accidents or something). Might affect my husband as he'll be driving to the airport a lot, but we'll think positive.

We'll be living at Sonterra for whoever asked. We are always somewhat restricted because of our 'kiddos', and apparently they are pretty dog friendly. We looked at Riverlodge and Tintarra as well in that area and the pricing and features were best at Sonterra.

Is the area quiet aside from the heavy traffic at rush hour?

Travel east to 183 then on down to the airport. As long as it ain't rush hour, that would be a breeze.

Nearby the 620 and 2222 intersection:
Super Walmart
Target
HEB
Walgreens
Home Depot
Rudy's
McDonalds
Taco Bell
Wachovia
Compass Bank
Bank of America
Oasis Cantina
Your kids will go to Stiener Ranch Elementry, where my wife works.

No, the scenery will not be like it is on 360. It is definitely more commercial, as you can gather from BFH's posts. But it's not like Westheimer in Houston or anything. At least there are some trees.

We recently moved into this area ourselves....we are in River Place. We are happy with our choice. I work south and my wife central. The commute isn't great, but it's doable. I tend to work late so I avoid the heavy traffic coming home. (I hate sitting in traffic.)

You touched on several of the high points....close to Lake Travis, Emma Long, Bull Creek. There are not a lot of good local restaurants in the area, but there are a few - we like Flores for Mexican, Boat House Grill (good catfish), Rise and Shine Bakery, and Rudy's.

Target, HEB and Home Depot are all incredibly convenient. If we are going out for dinner we'll either meet central after work or go on the weekends when the commute is ~20 minutes to downtown.

The commute to the airport will not be great. It's gotta be close to 30 miles of non-direct stop & go driving. 183 might be the most convenient, as mentioned. You'll have to figure that one out.

I just looked at that Apartment Ratings website and the overall review didn't seem that good. Seemed to be a lot of complaints about the property management.

And this story of a haunted apartment is just a little creepy.

Thanks for all the advice and replies

BFH's post was quite fulfilling, 'cept I don't think your wife wants my "kids" at her school (see the sig).

As far as the ratings go, I only really looked at the last year's worth because management and tenants are ever changing. And yes, that haunting one was, um, strange.

We value quiet and scenery more than quick commute. We lived in Austin for 5 years before leaving so we know the locations well. Hubby knew going into this that he'd have a drive ahead, but he didn't care. We'll just hope everything turns out for the best. I've never really had a bad apartment experience except for living in the hellhole we call Riverside.

And also, my apologies for the supersized dog pictures in the sig. I have no idea what the hell happened.

Ahhh, now they are fixed. Good.

FYI, I lived in those apartments for 6 months back in 2002 or 2003 and I never had any issues with the management or the supernatural.

I lived in Sonterra about 7 years ago. You're closer to 620/Anderson Mill than you are to 620/2222. I concur with the suggestion that you take 620 to 183 to the Airport, although Anderson Mill to 183 may be faster. It's a pretty long but easy trip.

You'll be less than 10 minutes from the new Pluckers, so you've got that going for you.

Sonterra is one of the older complexes along 620 -- it went in before any of the others. That said, it's still fairly new. As one of the posters noted, it's as close to Anderson Mill as it is to 2222, but will only add a few minutes to the drive to 2222.

Restaurants:

Boathouse Grill is great for catfish and burgers
Mood & Food (at River Place) for a nice meal -- italian and mediterranean. More expensive than a casual place, but not outrageous, and their pasta dishes are pretty inexpensive. Nice bar area for drinks/appetizers and also a patio, and the food is very good
Flores -- ugh. Sorry, but it is small, crowded and the food just isn't that great. Drive another 10 minutes to Los Pinos on Hudson Bend Road. Good stuff.
Tutto Gusto -- just opened up In Steiner Ranch. Italian, owned by the Siena/Brick Oven people. Good food.
Seoul Food -- fast food Korean in the River Place center -- food is really good and inexpensive.

FYI: the best cleaners in the one in the River Place center (can't think of the name, even though I go there all the time!). They do their cleaning on-site, unlike the one by the Four Points HEB.

As for the airport, I have to head out there from time to time as well. If he's leaving by 6:30 a.m or so for an early flight, go 2222 to Mopac to 71/Ben White. With no traffic, it's very fast to go that way.
