Intelligence, leadership, and athleticism - this guy has the whole package, as his coach pointed out. I'm sure he lists Texas pretty high among his college choices.

thanks for the article - I wish him luck in his college career and afterwards and absolutely want him in burnt orange!

The assistant manager Marty Allsbrooks recalled the time McFarland helped fellow employees who were struggling to stop a shoplifter outside the store.

"He just bear-hugged him," Allsbrooks said. "He wasn't going anywhere after that."

nice...

While the worth of an undergraduate education/degree is how you apply yourself...I'm irked when recruits bust out the "education is important to me" bit and mentions schools that judging from general ranking/opinion/reputation are not exactly strong academic institutions.

If JM is serious about academics, this isn't really a contest. OU will talk about national merit scholars and a bunch of bs, but they're ranked 108 to UT's 44 in the US News 2008 rankings.

...and let me know if you can find LSU on the list.

Looks like he wants to be the next Glen Dorsey. Who can blame him? Dorsey went top-5, while Okam went in the 5th round. LSU just won the National Title game in New Orleans. We won the Holiday Bowl. While our gameday atmosphere is fun, it's nothing like Death Valley.

Since McFarland is from East Texas, I'd say that he's LSU's to lose. Texas has an outside shot, but we're probably not a desirable location compared to LSU from a purely football standpoint. To me OU has zero chance.

Tandoori Horn, your glass is half empty...Probably more then half. We really need such positive folks as yourself, or are you Agroid?

Just being realistic. Our own lack of success in developing DTs the last few years, combined with LSU being the hottest program in the nation is going to hurt us in 1/1 recruiting battles with them.

It also helps that every LSU DT since 2003 has made All American and all are playing pro football still.

Chad Lavalais AA 2003
Kyle Williams AA 2005
Claude Worten AA 2005
Glenn Dorsey AA 2006-07

Ricky Jean-Francois will make AA before leaving LSU baring injury, he was the BCS National Championship Defensive MVP.

This kid sounds too smart to go to LSU. He would get bored in Bayou Bio 101-getting to know the nutrea; or, Math For Shrimpers-counting with missing fingers. If his mom is for real with the talk about a group of coaches to help him transition into manhood, then I like Mack vs. The Hatter.

If academics is that much of a key to McFarland, let's hope that Stanford, Duke, Rice, Vanderbilt, and half of the Ivy League don't get involved in recruiting him. I'm pretty sure he wants a good education, AND to play for a team with a chance to win it all. That sounds a lot like UT to me.

Texas instituitions don't offer a degree in education. You must have an academic major in addition to teacher training courses. I know this also to be true in Tennessee where I got my initial certification when I went into teaching as a second career in the early 90's. The majority of these courses are pretty worthless. I'd give Tandoori Horn credit for pointing this out except that was in no way the intention of his post so I won't.
