5A Final Four will have different look

The Region I and II teams will be familiar - the Metroplex has Duncanville vs Cedar Hill and Mesquite vs DeSoto though the Skeeters would be new to the tourney - but Regions III and IV will be bringing a totally new look.

Houston Strake Jesuit vs Houston Chavez - HSJ being private school playing UIL would make their first appearance; they're 36-0 so they must be salty - and Chavez a new school.

San Antonio Wagner vs San Antonio Southwest - The Alamo City will be representing. No Austin or any other South Texas area schools made it. Wagner must be a newby like Chavez. Seem to recall a Southwest being in the tourney but that could have been Fort Worth. Otherwise are they athletically noted only for producing Ty Detmer?

In 4A Mansfield Timeberview will try to get past Amarillo Palo Duro to add to the two Mansfield girls teams that made the Final 4.

Region II will produce a Metroplex team either Lancaster or Kimball - the Knights are the only DISD team to advance this far.

Region III will be either Houston's Jones or Yates. Region IV will be either Austin's LBJ or Lake Travis. Does Gilbert shoot hoops too?

The lower divisions always produce excitement and it's great to see all the small towns gather with the big city guys at one locale for the State Tournament.

At any rate, this is always an exciting time of year for HS Basketball and am looking forward to seeing how today's games turn out.

Wagner is in the Judson ISD and is Judson's sister school. Actually Judson (Coached by Mike Wacker) was upset by Southwest and a great quater by a great player Kendrick Robinson from Southwest. But, they didn't have much fight for the next day as Wagner blew them out.

Strake Jesuit will play DeSoto in first game Friday afternoon; Cedar Hill vs SA Wagner in the nightcap.

In 4A it's Yates vs Mansfield Timberview and Kimball vs Austin LBJ.

HSJ is undefeated and Yates has one loss so those should be the favorites.

Dallas Madison is alive in 3A meaning that DISD is the only school district with a shot at two boys titles.

The Stafford Spartans are headed back to the 3A state tourney. They are pretty salty, and their best players are juniors. Only lost to 4A Timberview by 5 points.

Is Stafford the school on Dairy Ashford?

Yates killed Timberview to reach the finals. Kimball and LBJ should be close to a final score. Madison beat Stafford 68-58 and is heading to the championship game.

Well, hate to break it to you TYS, but SJ's dream is gone. Derailed by de Defense of DeSoto. 48-44. It must have been stifling...Joey Brooks only went 4 of 23 from the field. Footballer turned hoopster 6'6" 290 lb. junior Evan Washington blocked the middle and prevented the SJ guards from driving the lane.

The Golden Eagles will now contest those fellow South Dallas County Cedar Hill Longhorns in an All-Belt Line Road Class 5A Final. The oddly colored red and black Longhorns nailed a 3-pointer with 2 seconds remaining to escape a scrappy San Antonio Wagner.

In Class 4A it will be Dallas vs. Houston as the Kimball Knights take on the Yates Lions. Each team won their games Thursday as Kimball took down Austin LBJ by 12 and Yates creamed Mansfield Timberview 76-51. Yates has only been beaten once this year so they should be the favorite. Too bad this game will not be televised (starts at 3:30) as it should be a good one.

In Class 3A, Lubbock Estacado cracks the DFW/Houston domination of the top classes by taking on Dallas Madison. But the green and gold Trojans prevailed 68-66 this morning as Dominique Smith drained 2 free throws int he final seconds to secure the victory and return the state title to Madison.

In 2A Ponder will tangle with New Waverly after each won their semi's yesterday. Ponder features a 6'5" post which enabled them to take down Santa Rosa who's tallest starter was 5'10." New Waverly lost in their first trip to the tournament a year ago to a team we all hold near and dear - Tuscola Jim Ned. But they return this year with the All-Name Team led by X'zavious Harrison, SirHorace Saulsbury, Major James and twins Tyren and Kyren Watts.

Good luck to all and Congratulations to all for making their respective championship games!
