52 Dead in Monterrey Casino Attack

This is a brutal, horrific event, one of the worst I've read about since the escalation of violence in Mexico. The typical MO for drug cartels and gangs is to fight and kill amongst themselves with minimal collateral damage, but yesterday's blaze killed over 50 innocent bystanders, probably the result of either a turf war between cartels for the casino or a failure of casino management to pay off a drug gang for "protection."

Somehow this doesn't seem to be big news in the US, where a bomb in Nigeria that killed 18 is getting more attention. But to me this is a major tragedy, an escalation of the level and type of violence in Monterrey worthy of our attention, and a shift toward what even the President of Mexico and other observers have now labeled as outright terrorism.

Mexico's fight against the drug violence is not going well. I'm afraid It's only a matter of time before the US gets involved, and yesterday's tragedy takes us one step closer.

Right on schedule, Calderon is blaming the U.S. for this incident because of for our "insatiable demand for drugs".

In an ironic twist, "Calderon urged Congress to stamp out drug consumption and stop illegal trafficking of weapons across the border into Mexico."

Oh, you mean we should enforce the borders? I thought Calderon was against that.

Legalize everything and set up taxes on all of it, make it so that you need a permit, much like a TABC liquor license, to grow marijuana or to distribute and sell cocaine, heroine, meth etc....

Make sure there are legal disclosures that if you consume or use these drugs that there is no liability by the federal government and that health insurance will NOT cover medical costs associated with use of these drugs, but that you have the legal RIGHT to use them at your own risk.

DRUG WAR OVER

Calderon is 50% right. And it won't be resolved until we do some of the things 2003Grad mentions above- that is being mentioned by almost everyone I know with a brain who understands the issue- with the exception of our leaders who have no balls to do the smartest solution.

It's a lot easier to criticize the guy before you than it is to lead, as our past 2 Presidents, and current GOP hopefuls know too well.

Legalization and taxation would single handedly stop the drug war or reduce it by half.

2003 and mcbrett, while I agree wholeheartedly that legalization is the right course and in the long term will lead to a steep decline in drug related violence, I'm not sure it will do anything in Mexico in the short or even medium term. The drug cartels are big business, and if the price of drugs in the US were to drop after legalization, the gangsters will turn to even more violent activities to fill their coffers like extortion from legitimate businesses (which is already happening as evidenced by the casino attacks) and God only knows what else--more kidnappings? Sex rings? They have no scruples. True, without the drugs they will eventually run out of money to buy gasoline for their SUVs and ammo for their ATF-provided weapons and fade into memory a la Capone, but how long will it take and how much of a fight will they put up?

This is worse than most know. There is evidence of transnational DTO (Drug Trafficking Org's) starting to work together in substantial ways. Triads in Bolivia, Hezbollah in columbia, etc.

this is the next evolution of national security issues. narcoterror groups. We don't have the legal processes in place to handle a large volume of international narco terror.

The only way IMO to deal with this is to take the huge profits out of drugs. That will hopefully take some of money out of the human trafficking and gun business. We'll still have counterfeit merchandise to deal with but that is not usually associated with the same levels of violence.

I agree
Legalize it all BUT also put some kind of fee on buying it that goes into a fund to pay for the treatment when the bodies break down from too much usage.

Let drugs be sold in
wink.gif
drug stores. let people choose if they want to take/ use or not but then let them also pay for their own care.

Seems like a win win.

100p See. by tacking a medical fund fee onto the purchase of a drug the users would be creating their own fund for treatment.
That way it is all about choice and not forcing anyone who chooses not to do drugs to pay for those who do make that choice.

I do understand the same could be said about alcohol cigs and over eating
maybe that could come too
but with drugs there is a shorter clearer path , depending on usage and right now drugs ( as we use the term) are illegal.

Somehow this doesn't seem to be big news in the US

I can see it now...mom and pop down the street getting a state and federal permit to manufacture meth or cocaine. despite what you may think, the drug companies will not get involved in this because of the social stigma. organized crime will still be involved to some extent and it will continue to be made cheaper in mexico for the black market here in the states. this is nowhere near like the situation during prohibition in this country. liquor was nothing but a common vice in which most of the population participated.

Money Talks and stigmas walk.

Prohibition was put into place because drinking and associated profligate behaviors were stigmatized. No everyone took part in such behaviors. Prohibition failed for the same reasons that the drug war has failed, dragged along like a dead limb by weak politicians and frightened citizens.

It is not working. The wrong people are gaining from its effect on the market and people in this country are needlessly having their lives criminalized and militarized.

Bad policy.

General,

We need to move ahead. People have choices. They need to be able to make them.

Will it solve 100% of the problem? Maybe not. But it WILL significantly cut the problem down by A LOT. Thats more than the stupid current situation is doing.

Do you own a gun? Are you gonna put it to your head and pull the trigger? Why not? Self control. But guns are and should remain legal. Choice.

if someone wants to stick a needle in their arm to get high, more power to them. i could care less. i do care if i have to subsidize their habit or pay for their healthcare. nobody is giving me money so i can purchase a new gun or bullets to protect myself from the addicts robbing homes to subsidize their habit. they should have a choice and be forced to experience the downside of those choices without any help from me.

I agree, hence the disclaimers and waivers that if you lose, you have no right to healthcare costs associated with your usage, which are well documented already.

Legalize everything, but use at your own risk. No subsidizing. Let the free market do its job.
