While most everyone expected us to make it through the weekend, I think it is important to acknowledge the achievement of making yet another Sweet 16. This makes the fifth appearance in the final 16 in the last 7 years and clearly establishes us as a Top 10 program.
I did a quick calculation of tournament success since the 01-02 season (1 pt for 1st round loss, 2 for 2nd round loss, 4 for Sweet 16 loss, 8 for Elite 8 loss, 16 for Final 4 loss, 32 for Championship Game loss, 64 for Title. For this season, I included the team's progress to now.) and here's how Texas ranks among other programs.
Florida: 2 NCs - 134 points
UConn: 1 NC, 2 E8, 1 S16 - 79 points
North Carolina: 1 NC, 1 E8, 1 S16 - 76 points
Kansas: 1 CG loss, 1 FF, 2 E8, 1 S16 - 70 points
UCLA: 1 CG loss, 1 FF, 2 S16s: 57 points
Texas: 1 FF, 1 E8, 3 S16s - 39 points
Duke: 1 FF, 4 S16s - 35 points
Michigan State: 1 FF, 1 E8, 1 S16 - 33 points
Louisville: 1 FF, 1 S16 - 24 points
Memphis: 2 E8s, 1 S16 - 23 points
I didn't include the other 2 title winners in this span (Syracuse, Maryland) as they haven't really done much in the tourney outside of their title years.
We have to win a title to be considered among the upper tier of programs, but we have clearly established ourselves as worthy of being included in that next tier.
Barnes and company have built something really special here in the last ten years. The train shows no sign of stopping either. Friday can't get here soon enough.
