I think this in interesting for a couple of reasons.

First, this shows the importance of hiring the right coach. TAMU track/field was a B12 also ran. We throw incredible $$$ at Pat Henry, who leaves LSU, and builds a national champ in 4 years. Much like Saban at Bama, you hire the right coach and you will succeed. Nothing is a more imprtant factor in success in college sports than head coach. Not facilities, not tv exposure, not winning tradiation, nothing matter more than the head coach.

Fact: Mack Brown should make about $10M a year.

Secondly, it shows that there is nothing inherently wrong with TAMU to where they can't recruit the best black atheletes. The culture at TAMU is not off-putting to black athletes. Loser Mike Sherman is off-putting to black athletes, at least compared to Mack Brown.

Fact: Mack Brown should make about $10M a year.

Finally, it demonstrates what an incredible douchebag TAMU AD Bill Byrne is. Is it a coincidence that Byrne broke the bank to hire Pat Henry given that Byrne gets a fat bonus whenever TAMU wins a big 12 title in track (men's or women's) while his income level is unaffected by football performance?

Throw money at a track stud. Wins titles. Get paid. Go cheap on a football loser, continue to suck hind tit, and suffer no financial reprecussions.

Fact: Mack Brown should make about $10M a year.

What is this doing on the football board? IMO, track and field along with every other NCAA non-revenue sport needs to be moved to intramural status. Basketball, Football, and Baseball for men and Softball, Basketball, and Soccer for women should be the only ones with athletic scholarships. Use the money saved on changing all the other sports to non-aid intramural and allow for more academic scholarships. Let's get it done, NCAA!!!

Bundy, good to see you. n00bs, meet bundy, our resident reasonable ag.

he's right, and this thread is relevant to football recruiting. agroid's honkey-borg culture didn't scare away the recruits in the 80's and 90's, although some of them had incentive to overlook the nut-grabbing.

if aggy would just hire a either a folksy Mack Brown guy or a firebreathing bad-a, they'd be fine. In fran and sherman, they've had several years of neither..

To make matters worse for aggy, they have a jackass idiot who is completely unaccountable for the success or failure of the football program, which has played a big part in the financial meltdown of their athletic dept.

It's good comedy for us, but Bundy is about the only ag on the internet that will acknowledge the real problems. The rest just yell whoop, grab their nuggets and stick their heads in the sand.

Gee I remember Cat Osterman threads on the football board and I seem to recall other threads here that have nothing to do with football..... In other words, quit griping.

The football board is probably the most visited board on Hornfans. This is a major thing, this decommitment is. It shows that Texas just couldnt cut it in the mind of a world class athlete, and A&M was deemed the better choice. Who cares if Track isnt a major money sport.

That is a disappointment and alarming. Especially when it involves switching to a major rival like A&M or OU. But I don't buy that he was ever a big loyal UT fan. But then maybe I am too cynical.

I believe him when he says that after sitting down and looking at it, going to aggy was a no brainer with regards to the track program. Stinks, but they have the goods when it comes to track right now.

This isn't a football board, rather its a "recruiting" board so I posted the news which I found interesting for some of the football-related reasons I mentioned.

I also think the kid has a cool name. Apparently, he is a sprinter to watch over the next 10 years or so.

But the main reason I think this is of interest is that it serves as another data point that the head coach matters. And matter a lot. You put Nick Saban or Mack Brown or Urban Meyer at SMU, and SMU will be a top 10 team in about 5 years. You put Rick Barnes or JohnCalipari at UofH and they are a top 10 team in 3 years.

Anyway, good luck with Jeffcoat and Hicks. I'd rather have Hicks, personally. I have a feeling Jeffcoat was one of those kids who peaked early (from a developmental standpoint) and will be nothing special in college. (Not that I wouldn't love the chance to have him prove me wrong). Reggie Wilson, Mike Davis, the LBs, the OL from Northshore and the various DTs are what makes this class for Mack special. Hicks would be a killer way to close things out.

Bundy, that's just stupid. Mack chose wisely to go to a university with money, fertile recruiting grounds, and great tradition. If he went to SMU instead of Texas, he probably would have been fired. Some jobs are just dead jobs. Could Saban, Meyer, or Mack take North Texas to a national championship with lack of fan base, facilities, and tradition? Absolutely not.

Mack was exactly what Texas needed at the right time.
