Yes, entrance information would be helpful. Is the Cooley Pavillion the same as the Erwin Center? The original information mentioned both, but the most recent said 'Join Us at Cooley...". Just wondering if we go in the same entrance as for the games.

the Cooley entrance faces the south facing box office of the FEC (Erwin Center). You should be able to walk down Red River coming from the garage, past the box office on Red River to the outside stairs on the left, just after the big outdoor scree n on the side of the FEC. Go up the stairs and the entrance to Cooley will be on your right (double glass doors).
At least that was the way I was able to get to Cooley this past Saturday after that particular way had been blocked due to construction for some time.

I don't think you can walk down red river past the box office and up the steps to Cooley, I think you will need to walk up the incline on the north of the Erwin Center, and walk around the Erwin Center to Cooley - but I'm not absolutely sure. I asked about entry and the practice will be in the Erwin Center, but you have to go to Cooly and someone will take you to the Erwin Center - but my question is does it start at 2:30 or 3:30??? Both times are listed on different notices.

How did the team look from anyone that attended the potluck?
They looked fantastic. And fast. We may see a few players this year that are as quick as Lashann, Brooke and Tasia, but not many....and we won't see any that are faster. I recall one play where Lashann was pushing the ball up court, already at a high rate of speed, and then kicked it into another gear altogether (let's call it 'warp drive') and accelerated around her defender, taking it all the way to the basket. She was being defended by one of the guy's on the practice squad, and even he was like..."WTF just happened?" Sometimes she plays with too much abandon, though. She flew out of bounds on a couple of occasions, and one in particular while attempting to keep the ball in play she had an awkward landing. She was absolutely fine, but the play was unnecessary because she wasn't going to get to the ball regardless.

Another thing I like about Lashann is that she wants to shoot. If she misses a few, no worries, she'll put it up again the next time down. I would like to see others, and especially Brooke, put the ball up a bit more. Sometimes we get down the court so quickly, and then inexplicably pull back, and start passing. Don't worry about what happened the previous few plays, have the confidence to take your shot when it's there. But overall Brooke looked great; she has so much energy, and I expect her to be a major component of our success this season.

Someone else that impressed me was Tasia. I arrived early, before most of the team and coaches were on the court, and Tasia and a few others were taking practice shots. At one point she took 20 + in a row (BTA, mid-range...nothing closer than the FT line), and maybe missed one. Most were nothing but net. I knew she was fast, but never realized how strong her shooting was. Good stuff.

I'll let others give their impressions on the rest of the squad. Final comment is that it was nice to see almost everyone healthy, and playing. And it looks like the few that are still out will be back fairly soon. As Coach A pointed out, we are deep at every position this season.

I'm envisioning Kelsey Lang, Joyner Holmes, Ariel Atkins, LaShann Higgs, and Brooke McCarty next year.
That's a really nice lineup. :smile1:

Given what we saw in the scrimmage, I wonder if we will go tall in the post to start games. It's nice to have Imani, Kelsey, Sara, Jordan, and Olamide to rotate in the post. It would be nicer to have Diani healthy and in that rotation. We did go small at least once with Brianna at the four, so that option is definitely in play with different guards to switch in.

Nice article but he needs to learn the difference between a jumper and a reverse layup which is what Tasia missed.

Talk about speed. Use a small lineup with Ariel, Tasia, Brooke and LaShann with one of the posts and it would be hard to match up with them. They are no slouches on the defensive end, either.

It is really exciting to think about how healthy the team is, how much speed they have and how much height there is in the post, and how well conditioned they are now starting the season. Not to mention how well they all seem to get along as shown on the floor and at the dinner. Just like watching a big, happy family that gives no quarter on the court.

How did Olamide do? Based on her brief history playing the game and her athleticism probably covered up some mistakes in HS, I assume her defense is well ahead of her offense and the speed of the game might take longer for her to adjust to. Did she flash at all during the scrimmage?

Olamide only played a couple of minutes as she was only recently released to play in games. She had been practicing, though. Not much time to get much of an impression. But she is quick and runs the floor well. Not counting Jordan, she might be our fastest post.

Not to burst anyone's bubble, but we're not gonna see two 5'4 guards on the court at the time for extended minutes unless there is foul trouble or injuries. They may be quick, but that combination doesn't give us any size in the backcourt.

I agree. I could see a situation where LaShann becomes the starting point or put in the game when scoring is needed from that spot. Brooke is an excellent floor general but Higgs is a true double threat at that position.

I think there will be times we'll see the two together. It all depends on matchups, and what we're seeing from the other team at points during the game. Of course Brooke and Tasia may also sub for one another on occasion, and Brooke is likely to see considerably more playing time (if last year is any indication, which it may not be). So for those reasons we may not see them together very often. 5'4 is short, but still not all that uncommon in the women's game. There are probably a dozen or so guards in the 5'4-5'6 range in the Big 12, and several even shorter than that.

Doubt it. Can't think of a single reason why we would play two 5'4 guards at the same time unless there were zero other options. I don't see any other conference team which we would face that would have two "short" guards on the court at the same time (unless their depth is not good).

Bottom line is that we have so many options in the backcourt that playing two 5'4 guards at the same time is probably the worst one.

That may be, but we played two 5-4 guards last season at the same time often enough. I can certainly see it happening again. As mentioned, we have many possible combinations, and playing two 5-4 guards together is just one of them. As for LaShann at the point, I have not seen anyone except Brooke and Celina play point the occasions that I went to practice. I think she will have more of an impact at the wing (either SG or SF) than at point, if she plays point.
