49-0

60-70 years ago it was common to pitch a shutout. In 1939 Bob Neyland coached Tennessee to be the last team to not allow a single point for an entire regular season.

With the innovation of the forward pass and the evolution of offenses over the past 20-30 years it's hard not to score even if just by accident. Yesterday was a major accomplishment even if OU is in a "down" year.

Not only that, but the NCAA knows fans love scoring, so they have passed rules that favor the offense. What used to be holding is not, and look how hard it is to make a good tackle on a ball carrier without getting flagged.

Vol,

Please refer to him as "General Robert Neyland from Greenville, Texas". His HS coach was the first to use the hidden ball play, aka, "fumblerooskie"

Gotta be honest. I'm sad Auburn missed his FG or the team didn't score a TD in last 80% of the 4th quarter. OU's biggest margin of victory is 52 points set in 2003.

I have stated many times that besides mitigating injury risk to starters, the backups running handoffs in the 4th quarter was a waste of time in terms of experience gained to take over if needed.

I told the guy next to me in the Cotton Bowl that Bert Auburn has been great this season, but I had a feeling he was going to miss this particular kick. It's like the Gods wouldn't let us drive the final symbolic nail into the coffin! I'm actually shocked that Sark attempted the field goal, but I'm glad he did!

The damage that 49-0 did to the sooner psyche is clearly visible on a couple of their forum sites. But oh how quickly that can reverse. All the proof you need is texags after the Miami game or Hornfans after WVU.

I can't wait to revisit the sooner sites after this coming Saturday's game. Lose to KU at home? The blood-letting from a for #6 team's fans will be glorious.

I do agree, but-
Mack used to play as many backups and walk ons as possible once the game was in hand as it is a big morale booster for the entire team.
I know this because I was at a luncheon and he said that, so this isn’t typical HF conjecture.

I just think meaningful snaps would be better. Those backups could need to come in when the game is not out of hand.

Are you being facetious? Mack went into the National Championship game against Bama without a backup to Colt who had game experience. If I remember correctly (and I do), he put in a freshman with very little game experience and lost. I don't think his other quarterback got any significant playing time during the year either because Mack would keep Colt in until the very end of the game. The outcome might have been different with a seasoned quarterback on the bench.
He also waited too long in the Big XII championship against Colorado to put a "seasoned" quarterback in when things were going south in a hurry. Mack was a good man and a good coach, but I have said it many times and will always believe that his ability to manage the quarterback position was his weakness.

I've never thought that Gilbert getting another dozen passes, spread out over the course of 4 months, against demoralized 2nd stringers in blowouts, would have helped him play against Alabama any better.

Stat,

Having mop up time would likely have helped Gilbert but not nearly as much as WRs that could make the reads and run the correct routes for timing throws. You can look that up under the definition of "pick six"

We had 7 or 8 unforced drops of on-target passes that game, including 1 that cost us a touchdown and 2 others that caused interceptions. But the most damning bit is that Jordan Shipley was the only Texas player that game to record a reception while more than 5 yards beyond the LOS at the moment of the catch.

I just hope they keep that RB jump pass in the playbook for next season. I think it works great!!:hookem3:
I saw a video clip today and it almost seemed like our D-back jumped in tandem with the QB. Choreography majors must actually be happy now...they can claim to have served a useful purpose in fall ball...

Did Harris see the field during the season? I thought he had a lot of potential.

I cannot comment on Colt or the specific QB position, but I clearly recall Texas in blowouts having players in the game that Craig Way at was unable to identify without doing some searching.
Walk ons, third string WR, DB, LB, RBs etc. I had an excel spreadsheet handy as well to identify who was on the field. I’m m talking less than 5 minutes in the 4th.??
And I also know that at a luncheon I attended at the basketball court that Mack specifically spoke to this and said that ( I’m paraphrasing here) that these guys are all friends and the starters and second team players were motivated to see their friends get some playing time.
It helped moral for the entire squad, so in my opinion it wasn’t about development- but about rewarding the hard selfless work these kids did on the team.

That’s all I know. I’ll be back, googling facetious so I can’t answer that until I understand what that word means. BRB.

“treating serious issues with deliberately inappropriate humor; flippant.”

Oh, no I wasn’t being facetious.

Just passed along what I recall married up to a comment Mack had when asked by a fan at a luncheon on the subject.

Thurs. night approaching ISU game Sat. I'm EXPERIENCING serious nostalgia for last Sat....

I'm having serious regrets I cannot repeat last Sat. from 6 am when I woke up to 3 pm when the Horns laid a series record and glorious 49-0 *** kicking of the lowly sooners!
