on 11-28-63 we finished our last regular season game on our way to our first NC. This was on Thanksgiving Day and the Aggies were ready. The conditions on the field were terrible because it had rained hard recently. Coach Royal was upset and felt not enough was done to take care of the field. I don't know if it was because they could have covered it up or what. They did a special on FSN (I think) that I hope they show again someday because my wife unfortunately accidently deleted it on my tv. Anyway we scored first on and led 3 - 0 but the Aggies scored two unanswered tds to lead us 13-3. We had several close games that year but this was one we had to come from behind. At the end of 4 they still led 13-3 but we scored a td and made it 13-9 but we missed two points conversion wanting to put us within a field goal to win. With about 4 1/2 minutes we inserted QB Tommy Wade who was our best passer and he moved us up the field. There were several close playes. They intercepted one but tried to lateral and we recovered a fumbled ball. They almost intercepted another one but dropped the ball. The last pass was controversial when the Aggies had a near interception as he juggled it and fell out of bounds. It was close but I feel he was out of bounds due to the juggling. Anyway Wade passed us near the Aggie Goal line. Sophomore Hix Green made several key catches on the drive. Near the Aggie Goal line regular QB Duke Carlisle went in and on a QB sneak got it in with 1:29 left and we won
15-13. This saved our NC season. A good day indeed.

That was a real nail-biter, all right. It was also just six days after JFK was assassinated in Dallas.

I remember watching that one live on TV. Maybe the only one I saw real time that year. I saw the OU game in a delayed broadcast after the 10 o'clock news, but of course you knew that the Horns had won 28-7.

That was back in the one-platoon days, correct? I was in 7th grade. I think that was the first time I was aware of my sphincter getting turning-charcoal-into-a-diamond tight, when aggy had the lead, and again when aggy almost pulled off that endzone INT.

Our close call led some of the east coast press to bash Texas...we shut them the hell up when we thrashed their poster boys (Navy) in the Cotton Bowl.

One of the PA workers played songs last week that bashed Cam Newton and Alabama promptly fired him. I had forgot in 1963 that the Aggies kidnapped Bevo but released him and he was found and returned unharmed but an Aggie fan make up a song joking about it and I think it was played at halftime of the football game in CS. How unlike Alabama which brought swift action against their PA worker but at least we won the game.

Texas allowed only 71 opponents' total points for the entire season. It was truly tjhe three yards and a cloud of dust. Offensively, the team was not nearly as powerful as the 61 team that lost to TCU 6-0. If the ball had bounced correctly, Texas could have won four straight NC's from 1961 through 1964

I agree Mobyhorn. In fact perhaps 1965 could have been added if we could have held Arkansas on that last drive and won the game. We had a great team till then but afterward the team suffered a mental lapse and wasn't the same losing three more before the end of the year.

I was a tender 7 yrs old in the fall of 1961 and 10 in 1964... but, I still remember shortly after those games and over the years how my Dad has remarked that the Saxton-less loss to TCU in 1961 was THE most painful loss he experiened and the 64 loss on the failed Krystinik 2 pt conversion to Green vs Arky as #2. I remember the 64 game but it did not cause me the pain it did my Dad

Fortunately, you never saw Marvin Krystinik throw a pass. They were aerodynamically challenged. But he won a bunch of games.
