Our team is ranked #314 out of 334 in free throw percentage according to ncaasports.

That is a feat folks! Look at the bright side, arguably the best franchise in college basketball history is #323 (UCLA).

That's all.

I am 99% sure that FT shooting will mean an earlier than anticipated exit from the NCAA's.

This is like a baseball team with no closer, a football team with a horrible kicker and punter.

It will cost you against quality opponents.

It was interesting to read that article and how the different coaches approach improving FT shooting. I would never think that NOT practicing shooting FTs would be the way to go, but I guess that is why I am not a coach.

Personally, I am a proponent of the shoot 100 in a row everyday until you improve. The AAS article seemed to imply that it gives you some sort of false sense of security after you repetitively shoot FTs, but isn't that the whole point of FT shooting - repetition, routine, confidence?

I've never understood how someone who plays basketball every day can be lower than 75 percent from the line. I mean, there's nobody guarding you, for crissakes, and so ******* what if a group of students are dancing and waving skinny balloons and signs at you -- you should be able to tune that **** out.

I can understand -- and accept -- missing one of every four, but anything more is inexcusable, IMO.

I would just like to see some sort of change..

Rick needs to spend a whole week just shooting FT's and reevaluating EVERYONES routine when they are at the line.

For instance, Pittman ALWAYS shoots his FT's long. Maybe he should back up a little bit instead of getting as close as possible to the FT line.

JCovan just walks up there, doesnt mess around, and shoots it. Guess what? He is one of the best FT shooters in the country.

One more thing - If someone makes it, DONT GO UP THERE AND MESS WITH HIM!!! Let him stand in that same exact spot and make it again!! You dont need to go up to the person at the FT line and say "Good job man!" or get a high-five. Its retarded. Just leave him alone, let him make 2 in a row and get back on defense.

I try to play basketball everyday. If I make a shot, I can make that shot over and over again in a row as long as I dont move. And keep in mind, I suck balls at basketball. I dont see why they cant do that at the FT line.

Adjust your **** holmes!!!

It's the same reason why pro golfers miss 6 footers....it happens. What many of you might not realize is how more difficult it is for bigger guys to shoot ft. Bigger hands mean more surface area on the ball to make a mistake. Also keeping in mind that division one bball is very difficult and the guys aren't exactly feeling like a million bucks when they stand on the line. I was a very good ft shooter when I pLayed (88% career avg) so I am by no means excusing it, but you guys HAVE to know that it's not the same for them as it is for you in your driveway. Just saying.

Doesn't matter what level you are playing at, there is no excuse not to shoot a reasonable percentage from the line. Any attempt to rationalize poor free throw shooting is just that, an excuse.

I tend to agree that it has a lot to do with the priorities of kids that have come up through the competitive levels and that trend continues. Kids these days are focusing on the flash and not the fundamentals.

I have only coached junior basketball, but free throw shooting was an important part of our practices and it showed in the games. I guarantee you that the teams I coached could beat this Texas team in a free throw shooting contest.

Third Coast - did you read the AAS article today? Very respected coaches in Division 1 talking about how sometimes they take the "no shooting FTs" approach. How can that possibly be a good thing?

Look, guys, I played two seasons of co-ed intramural basketball and scored two points in two seasons -- when a guy guarded me and I got the automatic bucket. I can't even hit the backboard -- I got no skills and I know it.

But I am not a D1 basketball player, either.

No one is counting on me when the game is on the line.

I realize that there are 12,000 people screaming at you. That's why you have to be so rock-solid in your fundamentals that you know you can knock it down despite having 12,000 screaming at you.

But what about our dismal FT shooting ON OUR OWN COURT? There's no screaming 12,000 at home.

There is simply no excuse for someone on a D1 basketball being less than 50 percent from the line, and I even am disappointed in that.

Because it is mennnnntttalllllll. That's why some coaches opt to not even PRACTICE them, or talk about them. Maybe natural abilities take over and you just release the basketball.

I think this team has a serious case of "you are what you think". If they keep telling themselves they aren't a good free throw shooting team, then so it is. Maybe its too late, but confidence kills lots of wrongs.

They need to try breathing out their eyelids and wearing women's lingerie under their uniforms (The rose goes in front, big fella). We should also keep some live chickens around for the occasional sacrifice to remove a curse or two.

Its all mental and at this point in time the team is in a mental breakdown condition. Not just FT's, but defense and offense and just playing basketball. Players with no confidence are not good basketball players. Everthing we do we have to have a level of confidence. I do not see it in our team at this time. Everyone is thinking and not playing basketball with some level of enjoyment to it.

We've slid down from a guaranteed #1 seed level to a good chance to make a FF run, down to a team no one will want to play, down to a toothless gutless self-destructive mess. I hope we can climb back up that flight of stairs we just fell down. I had thought that we would have been good this year even if James had declared last year. Now, I think we might have been looking at about a 10 game losing streak about now.

I would have settled for 50% FT today.....

We're so far to the left of the bell curve it's barely statistically possible to shoot much worse than we did today. Hell, even Shaq is a career 51%!!!

Watching Texas attempt to shoot free throws I do not believe there is a team out there with a worse percentage.
