3 vs.4 Stars

I noticed on Rivals today that we now have 19 4 Star commits where it had been 18 for weeks. Which one of our commits got promoted from a 3 to a 4 star?

thanks for pointing that out, jc.

notice that they are calling terrell a wr again.

besides the huge jump by mike davis, there was a nice movement in connor woods' position. many have said--only to hear the sooners howl--that ou offered woods first and blake bell was their fallback. the qb rankings now suggest that that might be the case. connor is now listed third while blake is in 6th place. that's not much difference--no doubt both are good--and rankings and a dollar will get you a bagel some places, but at least the rivals guys saw enough to necessitate a change.

Wow, Mike Davis really did shoot up. He is Rivals #34 overall. He was #24 in Texas midseason rivals list so that is quite a leap over the last half of the season.

With White and Jones also in the top 100 we have one sick WR class.

There is often a big difference between a 3 and 4 star recruit. However every year 1 or 2 of those 3 star recruits turn out to be studs.

08:
Newton
E. Acho
Blake Gideon (2 stars)

07:
Sam Acho

Not much from 06 with all of the attrition in that class. Attrition from that class probably hurt 09 performance more than anything else.....lost 3 OL from that class, QB back up in Snead, 2 potential starting DB in Joseph and Henry, TE in Marshall.

If you go back to 05 class:

3 stars:
Colt
Muck
Tanner
Hall

However I am a little uncertain if Tanner and Hall are really guys that in the end played above a 3 star status. They were more like guys who were solid 3 stars who after starting for multiple years were able to be very efficient college football players. Neither was dominant at their position or made many highlight plays.

So again 1-2 three star players from any given class will end up playing like a 4 star. In rare situations like Colt they end up playing like a 5 star recruit.

I think Gideon was the last 2 star player to come to Texas. He didn't start until the first game of his true freshman year.

Both Colt and Sam Bradford were 3 stars. That should tell you that the star rating system is not an exact science, but usually a good predictor of the future for most prospects. .

in the last few years for us......

below are players that were 3 stars (or below) with good careers (going by rivals of course).

sam bradford, dan cody, austin english, ryan broyles, iglesias, trent williams, adrian taylor, brody eldridge.

that is just the ones i could think of off the top of my head and that have played within the last couple years.

there are tons more if you want to go back to mark clayton etc.

but, to me there is a very difficult balance beween quantity and quality.

I think Hall overachieved his 3 star status because he was a major contributor early in his career. The downside was that he didn't improve much through the course of his career. The argument could be made that the lack of potential warranted the lower grade, but I don't that is a major factor in the grading - it's overwhelmingly HS performance.

that doesn't explain seastrunk, whose early youtube vids propelled him to 5. kid didn't do squat his senior year in terms of being special. he's talented, but his performance certainly didn't merit a 5th star.
