Anyone that has been there have any suggestions? Am interested in all things historical, but have a strong aversion to tourist traps.

Eat lots of Tasty Kakes.

And go to Jim's Steaks on 4th & South Street. Afterwards, walk it off by doing some window shopping and people watching around that whole neighborhood.

I found certain areas of Philadelphia to be great for walking tours. Went to go see the Liberty Bell briefly, but that was just about it. Other than that, we hit the main areas of town and just hit the sidewalks.

The historical stuff is all legit and mostly in the same area, near 5th and Market Streets. Most people flock to the bell, which is interesting but probably not worth a long wait. The nearby Independence Hall and Constitution Center are great. Also Franklin Court, which contains a free museum (enter from Market St between 3rd-4th).

The Art Museum is outstanding and you could spend a whole day there if you want.

The cheesesteak places (Jim's, Pat's Geno's) can also suffer from long lines. Most little sub or pizza shops can make a great authentic cheesesteak anyway. Also get lunch at Reading Terminal Market, on 12th & Filbert near City Hall.

The Phillies ballpark is pretty cool as well, if they're in town.

Some food recommendations:

Honey's (800 4th St in Northern Liberties)--great brunch place
Capogiro (13th & Sansom)--best gelato ever
South Street Souvlaki (5th and South)
Villa di Roma (S.9th in the Italian Market)

It's Morimoto. I think supposedly it's gone downhill since he opened the one in NY, but I'm sure it's still good.

Maybe do a tour of Yards Brewery in Fishtown? They make great beers and give them away sometimes.

Tacanelli's is the best pizza in town, but it's deep up in the cut and you have to call ahead to reserve your dough.

Here's a legit local list of best cheesesteaks: www.610wip.com/pages/351421.php

spent a day in philly, had a blast at a phillies game. stadium is indeed awesome, really cool patio/deck thing in center field. went out downtown after the game, they have a pretty decent bar scene in one part of town (i was very drunk after the game so i dnot remember any names). anyhow, philly has its bright spots.

when you go to a sandwich place, ask for a Will Smith - if you want chicken.... to go.

The Art Museum will blow you away.

I was expecting.......well.......a lot of art.

But they've got entire halls of reconstructed ancient structures from various civilizations, built right into the museum itself.

It is extremely impressive.
