The start of the season is getting closer!

The scrimmage was the women against the men. The starting five was Chas, Celina, Empress, Nneka and Gigi. I liked that Celina was more aggressive in looking for her shot. She looked more confident shooting the ball. It was easy to see the players playing more instinctively now than they did last season when they were learning a new system. It doesn’t look like the new ten second rule will be a problem. The new defensive rules may be another problem. Much less contact is allowed on the perimeter. And there’s a new zone for charging. I didn’t catch all of the explanation but it sounds like a better situation for the D.

Nneka is going to be a beast inside. Imani got some impressive plays, including an alley oop pass which she converted. Look for all of the players to be able to outside and shoot. The posts likely will pick those times but the threat will be there. Chas got some good looks and drained a number of treys. I do remember a couple of others hitting from outside as well. Ball and player movement is going to result in more open shots from the perimeter.

Brady is just getting back from an injury and was going to the floor for loose balls. She hit a mid range jumper and made a pretty pass to Chas who sank a 3. She and Ashley, coming back from a knee injury in January, played limited minutes. The only players not to get in were frosh Brianna Taylor and Nekia Jones. Hopefully, they will be ready for the opener, though. Lilley and Kelsey both got quick hands. Neither has the speed of Nneka in getting down the court, but they work hard inside on both ends. Nneka beat everyone down the court at least once to get a layup opportunity. IIRC, Nneka got the FT line more than any other player. I hope Chas and Brady get to the line more often this season. Kelsey did talk about how much faster and physical the game was from high school. Imani obviously learned that as she looks like she seriously hit the weights this offseason. It was nice not to see any braces on anyone.

The team focused on pushing the ball quite a bit as well as spreading the floor when in their halfcourt offense. Imani has worked on refining that short hook shot she shown last season. It’s going to be difficult for opponents to stop if she can hit it consistently from 3-5 feet. Both Celina and Krystal were able to penetrate and finish. Both of them joined Gigi and Chas in hitting treys. I think Celina will start at PG but Krystal will get plenty of playing time. Right now, Nneka, Imani, Lilley and Kelsey played in the post with Gigi sliding between the post and the wing positions. All five played together in various combinations. Can’t wait to see Nekia and Brianna on the court.

Don’t forget that the exhibition game will be on Halloween night.
