Texas added a key commitment to its 2014 recruiting class earlier tonight when Houston Lamar safety John Bonney pledged to the Longhorns.
Bonney, who is 6-foot-0, 182 pounds, chose Texas over Stanford, Baylor, Oklahoma and Ohio State among others. Bonney called the Texas coaches earlier this evening to give them the news.
His pledge gives Texas 24 commitments for the class of 2014. He is the third defensive back pledge in the class, joining Jason Hall of South Grand Prairie and Jermaine Roberts of New Orleans St. Augustine. He's also the sixth prospect to pledge from the Greater Houston area.
Bonney intercepted three passes as a junior while helping Lamar to the 5A state title game. He played both cornerback and safety for the Redskins last season.
Bonney's father played basketball for the University of Houston.
Bonney, a four-star prospect, is ranked the No. 9 safety in the country and the No. 118 overall prospect by 247Sports.
