Blue Star
top ten has three Texans on it: #1 Lauren Cox; #4 Joyner Holmes and #6 Nancy Mulkey. Horns have interest in all three. Cox and Mulkey have been to a game at the FEC.
Amber Ramirez, San Antonio, is ranked #15. At #17 is Nancy Chou from Plano West. Texas is also looking at her.
I sure hope that Texas is recruiting her. I know that we got Brooke coming in and that Higgs is coming in 2015 but Higgs seems to be more of a combo guard. Brooke and Amber would be a dynamic PG combination.
5'11 PG/SG Calveion Landrum of Waco LaVega is the guard I want for the class of 2016; if we can add her to Higgs and Atkins, we will be lethal offensively and defensively. Plus, with her skills and length, she is versatile enough to play PG, SG, or SF.
Amber Ramirez (San Antonio, Texas), San Antonio’s Finest – 2016
The player our staff nicknamed “Sauce” two years ago at EBA Camp for her slick and tasty dribble attack moves has become something of a master chef. The 5-foot-7 point guard has taken her ability to break defenders down with combination moves and blended them well with a growing basketball I.Q. Sauce can certainly spice things up with her trademark euro-step move she finishes with a floater over the weakside help, but she’s eliminated much of the overdribbling and also become one of the best catch and shoot guards in the class.
Ramirez has countered her relative lack of ideal size by developing a lightening quick release. She knocked down numerous shots this weekend with defenders running at her. She also showed the ability to play off the ball as SA Finest runs several of their sets through fellow ELITE 60 rising junior Chelsea Dungee.
We're finally seeing a few of the in-state 2016 group make their selections. With 10 from Texas in the Hoopgurlz top 60, inc 7 in the top 21, there are certainly enough to go around in this class. That's definitely a good thing for teams like the Bears and Ags, and even OU. The Horns have really dominated these programs on the recruiting front these past few classes. The biggest surprise for me has been how poorly Baylor has done with recruiting in recent years. For a program that boasts two NC's during the past decade, it's hard to believe their last top 10 signee was Griner in 2009. Their top recruit in 2014 was #41 and in 2015 #50; compare that to three top 10 recruits, and another top 30 for the Horns in those same two classes. They do have Jones transferring in for 2015, but no question their recruiting has been abysmal relative to what you'd expect given those championships. Perhaps the downturn is a result of all the bad mojo surrounding the program in recent times, and no question Mulkey is a polarizing figure; whatever the case, you know they're going to be particularly aggressive in going after those 2016 recruits. It's been a similar story for the Ags; their top recruit for '14 is #47 and for '15 they have a commitment from HG #36.
As far as 2016 goes for the Horns, I think it's important that we sign one of either Cox, Holmes or Johnson (though we definitely have room for more than one, should that be a possibility). With Imani's final season in 2015-16, and Kelsey and Lilley both seniors in '16-'17, any bigs we sign are going to step into a sweet situation. Considering all of the talent we already have on board at other positions, yet still a scenario where they'll be expected to step in and immediately contribute...that should be a pretty big draw for those considering the Horns.
