2012 Scholarship Math Summary

As we approach LOI day, here is what I counted based on mackbrownfootball.com roster:

59 returning scholarships - excludes Cotton and Graham who are on medical scholarships and no longer count against the 85 max OR Seniors with eligibility remaining that have announced they will not play in 2012 (Berryhill, Buchanan, Irby).

24 verbal commitments including the 2 JUCOs and the incoming Freshmen that are already enrolled.

That is 83 scholarships currently committed leaving 2 for late commitments.

Does that sound about right?

Unknown - if any current underclassman is planning to go to the NFL. I haven't heard any mention of this lately and know of no one that has indicated they will do so.

Recruits still actively being recruited - WR DGB, Ath D Johnson, TE Hobbs, LB Santos, DE Cottrell. Any others?

+24 new freshmen = 82

TEXAS has room for 3 more scholarships.

Room for 4 more if Goodwin runs track instead of playing football.

And room for 5 more if there is anymore attrition ... such as place kickers.

Sppedway, I included TE Dominique Jones. Has he left the program? He should have two seasons of eligibility left.

Only kicker on scholarship is Russ. Haven't seen or heard anything about him other than he kicked off a couple times this past season. He was recruited as a punter and place kicker.

I included Goodwin since his particpation for the 2012 season is still possible, maybe for part of the season. There are some special rules for athletes that decide not to participate for a full year but I am not very familiar with them. If the intent is to return the following year, I believe that scholarship is counted. If Goodwin were to switch to only track with no intent to return to football, I believe his scholarship could be charged to the track allotment.

If a player runs track (or any other nonfootball sport) and plays football, their scolarship counts toward football. Goodwin = football scolarship.

So do we have 2 spots and looking at DGB,Daje Johnson, Dalton Santos, & Bryce Cottrell? If this is right then I know we have one spot reserved for DGB, who out of the three would get the last spot (or our preference).

Or am I wrong on what we have left?

2 spots for sure. other two are suspected but not confirmed at this point.

don't know if Dom Jones or Russ are enrolled for Spring semester or not. anyone got any info on this?

from what I read, Russ would get a shot to win starting kicker slot but Ben Pruitt and new recruit, Nick Jordan, have the same opportunity. the big question is punter. if Russ leaves, David Ash and a walkon punter, Highland Park's Nick Rose, may have to battle it out as punter. I don't know if Jordan or Pruitt can punt well.

my preference in order would be :

DGB - elite talent
Santos - need MLB depth now
Johnson - skills but RB is getting crowded
Cottrell - depth needed next in 2013 (Okafor done, Jeffcoat-pro? after 2012)

With Johnson, Santos, Cottrell, and now Davis in, how does that work with the yearly scholarship limit? Are they counting on academic casualties, grayshirts, or what?

With Calvin Howell transferring, it appears one more spot needs to open up for the current 28 signee class to fit under the 85 limit. As mentioned above, I don't know the situations with TE Dom Jones who was suspended for the bowl game or P/PK William Russ.

UT doesn't have a history of grayshirting players as far as I know so I suspect all 2012 signees will be currently on campus or will be at Fall practice.

Mack Brown's press conference at 3:30 may provide all the details.

There's the overall limit and the annual limit. The annual limit is 25 still to the best of my knowledge, so something has to give unless I'm mistaken. Sometimes they can make the spring enrollees count towards the previous year, but I don't know if that has happened or is even possible for the current enrollees.

You are correct. The three over the 25 limit will be most likely be assigned to a previous class count due to the various attrition cases where remaining eligibility was freed up (Howell, Griffin, Chris Jones, Connor Wood, Darius White, Traylon Shead, Bible, Brewster, Nkwopara, Cotton med, Trey Graham med, Buchanan).

Mack said in his presser that you can only take 50 in any 2-year period. I hadn't heard that before. We took 22 last year and 28 this one.

Mack was referring to the 25 scholarship limit per year = 50 in 2 years and since UT used only 22 last year and had numerous attrition cases (grad, transfer, med), 3 of our current 28 could be counted against last year's 25 limit.

Don't forget the over-riding limit of 85 scholarships.

NCAA Manual:
15.5.6.1 Bowl Subdivision Football. [FBS] There shall be an annual limit of 25 on the number of initial
counters (per Bylaw 15.02.3.1) and an annual limit of 85 on the total number of counters (including initial
counters) in football at each institution. (Revised: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/92, 12/15/06)

The 28 limit is for LOIs (Letters of Intent) not scholarships actually awarded....they are not the same! This rule limits oversigning somewhat by allowing you to sign an additional 3 athletes knowing that some will not enroll in the Fall. They might grayshirt, grades may be a problem, they might be directed to a JUCO, etc....

NCAA Manual:
15.5.1.10.1 Limitation on Number of National Letter of Intent/Offer of Financial Aid Signings—Bowl Subdivision Football. [FBS] In bowl subdivision football, there shall be an annual limit of 28 on the number of prospective student-athletes who may sign a National Letter of Intent or an institutional offer of financial aid from the initial signing date of the regular signing period of the National Letter of Intent through May 31. (Adopted: 1/16/10 effective 8/1/10)

Read the Manual if you need a mind-numbing experience!
