Listened to a bit of AM radio today and heard Stoops and Jones doing interviews on 2 different shows. They seem to be really getting out there in the spotlight already and the media seems to think OU is a championship contender.
Got me wondering what others thoughts are on OU this year? Here are a few of mine.
- Jones returns at QB for his 4th year as starting QB. This is the biggest plus for the Sooner this year in terms of the experience and leadership he brings.
- RB core returns intact. Whaley, Finch, Clay, Williams were top 4 rushers for OU last year and will all return in 2012. None of them are explosive IMO and it will be RB by committe. OU drastically increased their YPC from 2010 to 2011 (3.3 to 4.5). Having a solid running game that can move the chains and protect the ball is key for OU.
- WR unit will be young. OU loses Broyles to graduation. Reynolds is apparently no longer on the team due to violation of team rules. OU will bring back their #2 option last year in Stills. This would be a big negative for many teams, but OU should be able to overcome this due to their experience at the QB position. OU has some talented freshman coming in (Metoyer and Gardner being the early leaders for starting spots) and a top JUCO WR (Bester) as well.
- OU's defense will bring back most from 2011. There will be many juniors/seniors on their defense in 2012 vs. the soph/juniors that Texas will have.
