2012-2013 Horns Roster Up

A lot of youngsters on this team. Can't recall a Texas team that didn't have one scholarship senior on the roster. I know Dick and Melchionni are on scholarships now, but I mean recruited seniors.

I would guess it will be Ridley and four sophomores starting when the season begins.

For the first game of the year, I think it's five sophomores across the board as starters (Kabongo, Lewis, McClellan, Bond, Holmes). By the time the UNC or Georgetown games roll around, no doubt Ridley will be inserted.

It's kind of amazing how we've gone from no depth two seasons ago to at least one guy at each spot. Lanier has done a good job bringing in role players who are going to help at places of need.

Ridley starts from Day One. He will not be on the bench. Barnes will want to use him for his one year on campus and he did not come here to sit on the bench.

The only players taller than 6-7 are true frosh. So I think they get looks early. All of the players that will see any real playing time are going to be true frosh and soph. Didn't realize the team was so young.

I noticed the Men's Basketball Dept. don't keep you update on HornFans or Facebook! What's Up with that!

Starters [Backup(s)]:

1 - Kabongo
2 - McClellan
3 - Holmes
4 - Bond
5 - Ridley

Bench:

Lewis, Ibeh, Papapetrou, Felix, Holland, Lammert

I think this is the likely lineup but in an ideal world Ibeh is ready to contribute and we can start him at 4 to include both him and Ridley in our starting 5. We need length for our 2-3.

The BEST part about this team is that the core is likely to stick around for 4 years. That is what we need.

I think we go with the typical Barnes three-guard lineup instead of Holmes playing a lot. Lewis would be the outside shooter with McClellan the slasher.

We'll probably alternate a lot of Holmes and Bond early on until one of them separates. Either way, they're both going to get about 19 minutes per game this year.

I honestly think Ibeh needs a year off to improve his overall game. It's cool if you can block a lot of shots, but if that's your only dimension, you'll need some progress before you hit the floor. This leaves us with a whole lot of Ridley with small lineups when Ridley's on the bench.

Papi seems pretty good in workouts according to everyone. I wouldn't be surprised if he played a little 3-spot every game, and if he got comfortable with it, maybe moving into a Boddicker role.

Ibeh, too, needs to get stronger. Barnes hasn't been afraid to tell a big man that he needed to sit out a year, whether it was Pittman or Atchley or Klotz. He usually doesn't sit guards because that's what our scheme has always focused on.

Lammert isn't going to play the 4/5 spot anyhow, so there isn't a hurry for him to bulk up. He's a 10-foot-and-beyond kid. He's not going to be our primary rebounder on defense either.

Just to close the loop on this, looks like Ridley did start from Day One.

However, it is highly evident that he is more of a project than I was expecting. I thought he was further along. He will certainly need to adjust his game to the college game. He needs to control his body and his position on the floor.

It is quite possible he figures things out by the start of Big 12 play and really comes on and we only see Mr. Ridley for a year. Would not surprise me at all.

Project = Dexter Pittman. Ridley will be adjusted to the speed of the game and his role on this team by mid-season, not has 3rd or 4th year. Ibeh, to my surprise, seems more ready to go now than Ridley, which was the opposite of what I was expecting. With all of that being said, it's only been two games and these guys are freshmen, so I'm excited to see what transpires.

The only thing that you can compare between Ridley and Pittman is their size. Ridley is so far ahead of where Pittman was as a freshman (or even a junior), it is not even funny. You can see the skills of Ridley and he is in much better shape than Pittman was at this time in his career. Ridley just needs to get into the flow of the game, understand how to control his body and then he will be a force to be reckoned with when we get to Big 12 play.
