Surprised that TCU hasn't placed any frosh on their roster. Maybe they are waiting until they start summer school.

Horn roster is up:

2012-2013

A full roster of 15, with no seniors. But with 8 juniors, and just 3 freshmen, this is an experienced group. We do have the two juco transfers, and several returning from injury, so it may take a little while to see how all the pieces fit together. It should be an exciting year!

It's going to a very interesting year. After Baylor, it's hard to say, or predict how the teams are going to finish. I might put TCU and KSU at the bottom, but have no idea how places 2nd-8th are going to look. If pressed I might put the Horns, OU and KS 2nd-4th, but I could just as easily see other squads take those positions.

So many squads have the potential to be really good this season. The Jayhawks only lose one senior, and return both Davis and Goodrich. Honestly they were a revelation last season. They were picked 7th in the pre-season poll, and until Davis' injury had been a solid 2nd IIRC. And even without Davis, they upset Delaware and made the Sweet 16. I think their season will come down to how full of a recovery Carolyn has made. If she's anything close to the form she was showing last season I could see KS being really good this year. I was looking for an update on her injury/recovery and all I could find was an article with a pic of her standing on a ladder painting a Habitat for Humnanity home a few weeks ago. I can't imagine why anyone coming back from that type of injury would be climbing a ladder, but there you go! Maybe she's already made a full recovery?

It seems like so many squads return most if not all of their starters. That's true for the Sooners who bring back their full stating lineup, inc. Ellenberger and Hand, and bring in Hoopgurlz #'s 20 (Kornet) and 34 (Manning). OSU return most of their starters also, inc their top three scorers, and bring in Hoopgurlz #19 (Martin). We know first hand how tough WVU is and they should be even better this year. They also bring back all of their starters, and top nine scorers (they lose the 10th, poor things!). Tech is a little harder to figure, but they could be tough also. They bring back Morris, Smalls, Brown and Hyde, and also bring in big time JUCO transfer Jackie Patterson. Their incoming recruits inc Parade All-American Minta Spears, who surpringly doesn't show up on the Hoopgurlz list. In fact her Hoopgurlz ranking probably wouldn't even put her in their top 200, but she was named the Texas Assoc of Basketball Coaches top 3 pt and FT shooter for 2011-12. She also led her team to victory in the TABC All-Star game and was the high scorer with 21 points. I'm wondering if Parade is more on target than Hoopgurlz when it comes to Spears; it will be interesting to see how she develops. ISU loses one starter but brings back Poppens, Christoffersen, Moody and 6'7 Prins, while adding 6'4 freshmen Baier. It could be a very interesting year for KSU; they only have two players on the roster over 6' (a couple of 6'1 forwards, one of whom is a freshman), and lose several starters to boot. It could be a long season for the Wildcats given the height in the Big12 this season.

Overall it looks like it's going to be a another brutal season in the Big 12. I don't see Baylor going undefeated this year though; they should still win the conf by some margin but one or even two losses wouldn't surprise me. If I had to pick order of finish at this point it might be something like this:

1. Baylor.
2. Texas
3. OU
4. KS
5. WVU
6. Tech
7. OSU
8. ISU
9. TCU
10.KSU

But 2-8 are essentially interchangeable at this point, IMO anyway, so can't wait to see how things unfold!

Overseas, re your projection: BU is pretty much an automatic pick for first. As you state, the rest are pretty much up in the air. WVU brings back everyone except a senior who did not play that much. Everyone else has injuries/new players/transfers that will determine how they do.

I would love to see Texas finishing that high or at least in the top four.

Texas will not be a #2... not this year. Top half of the conference, yes.

hookem.gif

Top half of conference maybe, but new coach, loss of school record shot-blocker, loss of two very effective guards on both ends of the floor, one injured and suspect senior in the post and a freshman or JUCO transfer point guard in a very tough conference, and no reason to believe TX finishes above last year's 8th place. Best case scenario 6th: Behind: Baylor, KS - Davis and Goodrich might be the best one-two punch in the conference- up there with Griner and Sims, OK has nearly all their top players returning. WVU ate our lunch in the tourney and they have nearly everyone returning and none of TX's problems. Tech has a hardened and formidable crew. I don't think TX will finish last. Bill Fenelley always has ISU really to play, and Jeff Mittie has a history of some success, and you underestimate a Deb Patterson coach-teamed at your peril. Worst-case scenario: TX jostles OSU for tenth-place. I say TX finishes 8 or 9: A head coach who has never been a head coach in a BCS conference, a team with zero senior leadership, an inexperienced point guard: blanket Fussell, harass whatever newbie is playing point. TX has been reliably mediocre for the last nine seasons or so, next year, we become bad. Unless Aston is a miracle worker, and there is nothing in her record to suggest that. I hope we avoid a losing record. First round exit in the big 12 tournament, and no NCAA tourney. I would love to be wrong, but all evidence points to the contrary.

Babhorn - no question we could see WVU finish near the top of the conference. Perhaps I was giving a few others the benefit of the doubt. We all know how tough it is to play in the Big 12 week in and week out, which WVU hasn't done yet; time will tell how they respond. treefan - I don't disagree that we could just as easily finish near the bottom as the top, but the same is true for everyone not named Baylor. Your observations notwithstanding, the fact remains we return one of the conference's best players, and have 10 upperclassmen (inc the two JUCO transfers) on the squad. And (as far as we know at this pont anyway) everyone should be healthy to start the season, and we are bringing in one of the nation's top recruits. We absolutely have the experience, depth and talent to be very good this year, and just as good a chance as anyone of finishing 2nd. Of course it's a new season for everyone, and anything can (and usually does) happen in this conference. IIRC we even had teams move from near the top to near the bottom of the standings in a span of 3-4 games last season.

Anyone (fan, coach or media) putting Texas as #2 or even in the top half of the Big 12, obviously embraces the concept of "past performance is not indicative of future results". I'd love to see this team get ranked in the league where they deserve to be ranked based on their past performances. I think a ranking in the bottom half in the 6-9 range might serve as some motivation.

I love this site, you always get about two or three different points of view no matter the subject. And I love the fact that other posters force me to look at things without my coach glasses on. But I really cant see us finishing any lower than 4th in the league.

Baylor at the top of course, OU, and Kansas are the only teams that I see maybe being better than us in the final standings.

It was mentioned that WVU "ate our lunch" in the tournament and it actually made me flash back to that game. Our defense was on point throughout the whole game, we just couldnt make shots to save our lives. And we actually had a spurt toward the end of the game that got us right back into it and we lost in the last 2 minutes. I would hardly call that eating someones lunch. I look for our team to be much better offensively. And with such a focus on rebounding I think we will generate more posessions and attempts this year as well.

Hard to see Ok st. (Losing 2 transfers) being better than us again this year, I dont see chas going 0-14 either.

TCU was at the bottom of their previous conference and they leave no reason to speculate they will do any better in the b12. They had one season where they upset two ranked teams and spent time at the bottom of the national rankings. but other than that the program has never been anything to write home about.

I will always predict us being better than Tech until they prove other wise. They were in the same position as we were last year and everything we have done this off season has made us better and I dont see them boosting their program that much from last season to the next

Iowa St will always be a tough game, especially playing them in Hilton, but again i dont see them being able to win enough games to finish ahead of us.

KSU is always an unknown going into the season and it seems like Deb always pulls a rabbit out of her hat. But I think it will take about two or three rabbits this year in order to avoid the bottom of the b12.

We return argubly the best scorer , and the second best post rotation in the league. Also when our JUCO players were mentioned earlier, it felt as though their abilities were being downplayed a bit. I dont know if most people realize that kids dont go to JUCO because of lack of talent, its often times the lack of grades. I cant tell you how many kids I've seen playing at the JUCO levels that were recruited by WBB's elite programs. Roberts is a stick of dynamite at the PG postion that knows how to defend as well. I dont know what her bball IQ is like, but I know offensively she makes us better than we've been at that postion. We got better and bigger on the wing by bringing in GiGi and I look for Enempali and Major to play more of the 3 as well. Brady Sanders is a lights out shooter that should be a wonderful compliment to Reed and Staffords game as well as providing us with some much needed spacing of the floor. Stafford is 6'7 and I think that coupled w/ her international experience makes her a lock for the starting 5 spot and I think it will give other coaches fits trying to figure out how to score in the paint. I am going to have to make myself be patient w/ her and allow time for her offensive game to catch up, but I look for her to do big big things on the 40 acres.

On paper we are the 2nd best team from top to bottom, but the game isnt played on paper so I leave some room for error by predicting a finish no worse than 4th.

Good question about Brady. And the roster also seems to have just been changed. Moore and McCoy are no longer listed; I guess their injuries are preventing them from returning, but there isn't a release on the site so can't say for sure.

I'm not sure who is going to prevent Baylor from going undefeated in conference play. They are going to be better than last year and UCONN is probably the only team in the county that can beat them this year.

Here is Baylor's roster:

5 Seniors: ** 6-8 C Brittney Griner (40-40); 6-0 G Kimetria Hayden (39-36); 6-0 G Jordan Madden (40-37); 6-1 F Brooklyn Pope (36-7); *6-1 F Destiny Williams (38-33)

3 Juniors: 6-2 F Mariah Chandler (REDSHIRT); 5-10 G Makenzie Robertson (33-0); *5-9 G Odyssey Sims (40-37)

1 Sophmore: 6-4 C Sune Agbuke (33-0)

5 Freshmen: 5-10 G Destiny Brown; 6-0 F Chardonae Fuqua; 6-4 C Kristina Higgins; 5-7 G Niya Johnson; 6-2 F Alexis Prince

Holy smokes, I didnt realize that Hayden, Madden, Pope and Williams were all seniors as well. They are going to be in a world of hurt for the '13-'14 season with only major contributors Simms and Prince returning. If you have aspirations of beating Baylor thats the season to look to, because they will face little if any resistance this year. Im going to also put it out there that I am excited to see how Imani and Griner matchup because even though Stafford is quite young, she comes from basketball royalty in her family bloodline, and she has played against the best in the world for a few years now, if she can go 1-1 with griner and hold her to 20-25 points, that will allow our defense to focus on their own players and who knows what could happen then.
