2011 Recruiting

Help me out here. I know that I really don’t know what I am talking about. I’m just trying to take more of an interest in the recruiting process and learn. So, please tell me where I am completely wrong…….

As far as I can tell there are 17 seniors who will be leaving following the 2010 season……

John Chiles
James Kirkendoll
Vondrell McGee
Kyle Hix
Tray Allen
Michael Huey
Brit Mitchell
Steve Moore
Greg Smith
Sherrod Harris
Sam Acho
Eddie Jones
Dustin Earnest
Jared Norton
Curtis Brown
Chykie Brown
John Gold

Although most certainly will not, if I have it right the following list technically could declare for the NFL draft. I could have easily missed a red-shirt sophomore…..

Aaron Williams
Malcom Williams
David Snow
Emmanuel Acho
Keenan Robinson
Blake Gideon
Russell Carter
Kheeston Randell
Fozzy Whittaker
Cody Johnson
Ian Harris
Ahmard Howard
Christian Scott
Nolan Brewster
Ben Wells
Justin Tucker

There is also a group who could leave the program due to injuries or a lack of playing time and inability to find a new position. Some of these could be before the 2010 season as I think we are still over the limit by three scholarships. This is a complete guess at this point based prior depth charts and the current incoming class……

Blaine Irby
Brock Fitzhenry
Jeremy Hills
Dravannti Johnson
Dominique Jones
Kyle Kriegel

Based on all this it looks like the 2011 recruiting class may be only 20 or 22 – and that could be high.

If I list what would, to me, be a dream class of 22 based on a combination of class rankings, what little I know about each player, players that Texas seems to have an interest in, and those who seem to have an interest in Texas, it looks like this……

WR - Jaxon Shipley
WR - Miles Onyegbule
RB - Malcom Brown
RB - Bradley Marquez
OL - Christian Westerman
OL - Sedrick Flowers
OL - Spencer Drago
OL - Josh Cochran
OL - Taylor Doyle
TE – MJ McFarland
TE – Chris Barnett
QB – David Ash
QB – Michael Brewer
DE – Cedric Reed
DT – Desmond Jackson
DT – Marquis Anderson
LB – Anthony Wallace
LB – Steve Edmund
DB – Leroy Scott
DB – Kolby Griffin
DB – Sheroid Evans
DB – Frank Shannon

If I had to drop some from this list I would do it in this order….

1 TE (21)
1 DL (20)
1 QB (19)
1 LB (18)
1 RB (17)
1 WR (16)
1 OL (15)
1 DB (14) …….so, in reality since OL and DB seem to be at the greatest risk of being under manned there is no way I would cut those slots. WR wouldn’t get cut because I think there is no way we don’t take Shipley, and there are too many quality WRs to not take one more. This is a good year in Texas for RBs and I would be shocked to not take two of them. In 2010 we will have six LBs who are underclassmen. Connor Wood and Case McCoy are still only sophomores in 2011. We just loaded up on DL. We seem to have TEs, and those who could move to TE, just can’t keep them healthy.

Please tell me where and why I have this wrong. I am becoming very interested and can’t imagine that I pulled it all out of my back-side and got it right.

In your list of projected juniors, IMO, the Williams duo will be the only two rated high enough to go early, I also think Ian Harris has some injury issues that need to be cleared up. I guess we will learn the playing status of TE Irby and Harris soon on if they go medical or not.

I had Quandre Diggs as the third best CB in the state, behind Leroy Scott and Kolby Griffin and I only listed two CBs in the class of 22........Like I really know who is best.......An example of why I was asking for opinions from others. I have no problem with Diggs. Do you think he should be ahead of Scott and/or Griffin?

I agree with you GoHorns about the 3rd CB……generally Sheroid Evans and Frank Shannon seem to be more highly regarded than Quandre Diggs. They both seem to project as safeties (another thing I could easily be wrong about). But, using my completely uninformed reasoning I thought they both might be the type who could play S or CB. Texas seems to be targeting that type DB, and that could provide the 3rd CB option……….I’m not arguing about anything here. Just explaining my thought process and looking for other opinions.

Hey Go and Outlook I have heard that CBs can generally play safety but it not always vice versa. This is mainly just coffeeshop talk t ype of thing so you know that isn't always acurate. Do you have any thoughts on it? I would think we should take at least 2 each.

It is my understanding – and I am far, far from an expert – that the major difference is in hip flexibility……and, that it is easier for a CB to handle the coverage assignments of a S than the other way around. But, also that if you can find someone able to play S who also has the speed and flexibility to play CB that is very desirable. There could easily be more to this that I don’t understand. I have heard Mack make reference to looking for recruits who can play any DB position. I am only guessing that the two I mentioned have that ability.

Assuming 17 seniors I would recruit the following positions and leave the names to Mack.
1QB, 1RB, 2WR, 1TE, 7OL, 1DE, 2LB, ans 2CB.Should make a balanced team not counting defections.

eastex... 7OL will not happen!
