2010 RB Strategy

I'm very curious to see how Mack and Co. recruit the RB position this year. Do we go Seastrunk or bust? He is the staff's #1 priority (as he should be IMO) but this seems like a risky strategy as I see RB as a position of need in this class. Do we take one of D. Williams/DJ Jones/Shead and then wait out Seastrunk? Do we go after someone OOS? Should be interesting to see how the staff moves forward.

We'll take at least two running backs this year. It would be nice is Seastrunk's one of 'em, but I doubt Mack's strategy will be him or bust. We've been hurt by that strategy at another position before, and Mack's a quick learner.

Who else besides Seastrunk would you like to see us offer? D. Williams highlights are VERY impressive, but it's hard to tell anything from highlight videos. I tried to find stats for him this past season but wasn't able to find anything.

DJ Jones' video is also impressive as are the stats he put up last season. Do we offer him and/or Williams, or do you think we go after someone I'm missing? I agree we need to take 2 backs, but the options after you get past the top 3 or 4 in state guys seem limited.

I personally would like to take 2 to 3 RBs this year because of the injury possibilities. It was for this reason I am hoping we take at least 3 Linebackers and fortunately we already have two verbals.

I wish they had taken one of these guys this year Dwight Smith, Kendial Lawrence, or John Hubert. They all had questions but what I saw of them in big games they could play.

Next year Seastrunk is the bell cow but Traylon Shead, Randall Holliman and DJ Jones should all get a look. They need at minimum 2 backs next year.

We take two of Williams, Jones, and Shead. Shead seems to like aggy, but could probably be turned, and may have the most raw ability this side of Seastrunk. We keep a 'ship open for Seastrunk, but don't bet the farm on him. Personally, I'd like to see Jones in burnt orange...he's impressive in a tough north Texas district.

Shead likes TAMU and will commit to Sherman (imo) if he doesn't get an offer from Mack. I've heard rumblings that Shead may get an offer from Mack as an ATH (kind of like R Sheppard last year).

mack has been landing the "hammer" RB lately (Cody johnson and Whaley) so I think he'll look to add a slasher/speed guy. Lache is the obvious target and the kid from Aldine as a backup plan. I don't see DJ Jones as an option.

I think Mack passes on Shead, passes on Jones, gets the kid from Aldine and probably gives Seastrunk a mid-summer deadline. If Seastrunk passes, I think Mack will look OOS.

I've heard that OU does indeed want to pursue DJ Jones, but I would defer to anyone with real contacts to OU. Mine is mainly heresay.

If I were a betting man I'd bet the following on RBs:

Seastrunk--Texas
Shead--TAMU
Jones--OU
Aldine Kid--Texas

The real question will be does Okie State/Tech/Baylor jump up and take Shead from TAMU. Especially if C Michael goes off as a freshman.

I'd be happy with the scenario you lay out Bundy, with Shead and the Aldine runner. I'm not sure Mack passes on Jones though, especially if he starts getting the feel that Seastrunk likes LSU or USC too much. Jones may be a bit bigger, but he's fast, quick, and productive...hard to pass up. Jones is also likely a Stoops target as well.

Yeah, I'll definitely buy some of what you're selling there, Bundy. But, I don't know how much I would put on Lache to Texas. Given, there is a LONG way to go, but it hasn't looked all that solid lately. I could have done without the USC gear.

There aren't many Texas kids wh Texas REALLY wants that go OOS to a place other than OU or LSU. I wouldn't worry about USC.

I think Seastrunk is an LSU/Texas battle with Mack being in position to strong arm the kid into making a decision or losing his spot.

There is a better than 50% shot (imo) of Texas landing the top class in the nation this year.

Mack let Moody go. he originally committed to Mack but a few months later was waffling and mack didn't give 2 squirts of piss if he left or not (having landed V McGee) and made no attempt to keep him in the fold. You may recall Goodson backed out of Okie Lite and was looking around and mack told him to pound sand.

If Mack REALLY wants you, and you are in Texas, you usually end up in Austin. If you do go OOS, its to Norman or baton ROuge.

Is it safe to ask now what the hell happened on Goodsen's recruiting trip to Okie State?

This has been like asking about the Warren Report.

Does the "Aldine Kid" not have a name...or is that it?

On Goodson, its tough to say and I'd rather not speculate on here. From what I gathered he didn't act in the best manner in Stillwater and when combined with the fact he was going to decommit, Gundy sent him home.

Nothing earth shattering or criminal, just dumb 18 year old handed-everything-on-a -silver-platter type stuff.

"My name is the Aldine Kid, but my friends call me...the Aldine Kid." (Gene Wilder, sort of...)

Around Aldine, he's known as Dontae Williams.

I think it's nuts to think about bringing in more than one RB for 2010. we're a passing team that rarely lines up with more than one back. additionally, good RB's can come in and produce right away. if we get a little thin at RB it is a lot easier to play catch up with the next year's class than just about any position.
