2010 class, just the defense

Looking over the class defensively (only for now) it screams out quality and quantity. You have a potential defense in a couple of years that could look like this (yes it's an extreme longshot but key word was potentially)

DE Jeffcoat,Wilson. backup Daniels
DT Dorsey, Bible backup Cotton
LB Hicks,Benson,Jackson
S Cobbs, Phillips backup Jackson
CB White, Byndom

That makes every single starter a ESPN national 150 player. Considering about half that list is offense. That means the entire defense could be made up of the nations top 75 defensive recruits. They'll probably never all be on the field at the same side but that is extremely impressive. Unbelievable just does not give justice to the job Mack and Boom are doing.

Whatever Boom is getting paid, it just isn't enough. Single biggest hire besides Mack since Royal. The energy he brings to that side of the ball is contagious. As good as we were last year with 3-4 future NFL starters, I can't wait to see how good we can be when we have 6-7 future NFL players on D.

I'd personally prefer to see Cobbs not at safety, but on the other side of the ball at running back. He's just too effective with a ball in his hands to take that away.

I am sure that the coaches will use Cobbs where shows he can excell. We are fortunate to get him from Oklahoma.

I wonder what our traditional rate of attrition is? just tracking three things, grades, injuries, and getting kicked off the team for breaking rules or laws.

I would think of those, could you estimate we could keep 75% on the team? If so, then you're still looking at one heck of a starting lineup when they are juniors. If we continue at a 75% clip, then there's no telling how good this D could be.

Even if you drop it to the 60% area, I think we're still in good shape.

If it drops to 50% or so, then I think we're in danger of having a mediocre defense.

Also, are we reasonably confident we will get 100% of these guys actually enrolled? IOW, there's no attrition before the season, correct?

I told a co-worker HF yesterday that it is insanely unfair to other teams what Coach Boom is going to do with this extraordinarily talented D class coming in.

Fellow HF's, you are going to see some incredible NC caliber defenses the next several years...

I was afraid Daniels and maybe John Harris would get thoughts of exploring their options. I hope not, because if Mack offered early, they're probably the kind of kids we'd be proud to have representing us. Daniels is in the same spot as Sam Acho, not as highly rated as some classmates but everything you'd want Mack to bring in. He seems to have worked out pretty well...
