2009-10 roster

looking at the roster, we have nine players, assuming no late signees. It's a thin roster but a very versatile one. Every player can do duty in at least two positions, most can handle three. This gives the staff a lot of combos that they can mix and match depending on who they are playing and game situations.

Right now the roster is as follows:
Yvonne Anderson, 5-7
Erika Arriaran, 5-10
Ashleigh Fontenette, 5-8
Ashley Gayle, 6-4
Kathleen Nash, 6-2
Kristen Nash, 6-3
Brittainey Raven, 6-0
Cokie Reed, 6-4 (6-5?)
Lauren Flores, 5-7

The one area where they will be thin is in the post with only four post players when Kat is playing there. I was thinking that they would be really small in the backcourt but only Lauren, Yvonne and Ashleigh are 5-8 or 5-7. Erika at 5-10 is the only other player under six feet. The Horns will have good size inside with Ashley at 6-4, Cokie at either 6-4 or 6-5 and Kristen at 6-3. Kat at 6-2 is also has decent height inside. The Horns also will have good size on the wings with Kat, Brit at 6-0 and Erika. The Horns will be able to have five players 6-0 and taller on the floor or go with three small perimeter players (Lauren, Yvonne, and Ashleigh) and two bigs (Ashley, Cokie, Kristen, or Kat) inside and any combo in between.

Staying healthy will be big for the Horns this season. Everyone should be in double digit minutes this season if healthy. This will be pretty experienced team, with a good blend of upperclass players and first and second year players. Staying out of foul trouble, especially for the post players, will also be an important factor in how the team does.

Well, can't wait until summer camp to get a look at the team.

Don't forget Earnie......

(as I cross my fingers)!!!!!

"The Horns will be able to have five players 6-0 and taller on the floor"

How? None of the players 6-0 or taller can handle the point.

Brit has played point, granted not often but she has. And, no, I don't expect her to do so with Ashleight, Lauren and Yvonne playing. But she could in a pinch.

Bringing the ball up does not make her a point guard.

Alana Beard racked up over 500 assists while at Duke, but she was not and could not be the point guard. It isn't just a position. It is a mentality.

Cam, I didn't say that she brought the ball up. I said that she had played the point. Granted, it's not her best position, but she did play it. And, no, I'm not talking last season. Last season, there were too many options for her to be used at a position which is probably her third best option. I have no doubt that, should Coach G wish, Brit could handle the point should Coach G want to go as big as Texas can go.

Sorry, but I don't see it. Brit is not a playmaker and doesn't have the handle to play the point, even in a pinch. Again, look at Beard. Great assists, but not a point guard.

Is anyone else a little nervous about only 11 on the roster?

We lost three players during the season in '06....now, granted, that was an anomaly, but....

I understand GG's reluctance to load the roster with bench sitters, but....

just sayin'

BBV, there's only 9 on the roster as of now. Could change by the end of the spring signing period, though.

Cam, looks like we disagree about Brit.

My bad, I made a typo....but was always bad in math...

Now I'm even more nervous...

3 injuries (God forbid, and knock on wood) would give us ONE bench player...sure hope Earnie returns!!
