2008 will be exciting

2008 is going to be a ridiculously exciting year. And I'm not saying that because it is the next year. All of the youth that will see the field this year is what is peaking my interest so much. Young guys are going to be seeing substantial playing time at RB, DB, DT, LB, and WR. Could this be a recipe for disaster? Possibly. But it also could be the beginning of the UT talent level cycling back up. It am so excited and I can't wait to watch the season play itself out.

And Mack is going to let the best player play which should create a lot of excitement for the team and players this summer and into the season...play to win baby...

I also agree; 2008 is very exciting because of what it means this year, and because it really sets up the stage for the next 2.

We can do it this year.

I just finished re-watching our NC Rose Bowl game, while at the same time going over our 2008 roster. I'm pumped, and my judgment is clouded by a burnt orange haze. But we can do it this year.

There's that '08 vs '09 debate. I was with the '09 crowd, but now I'm feeling that if the football Gods bless us with a relatively injury-free year like 2005, and if a few critical breaks fall our way (such as if JC's fumble against OU last year was recovered instead of lost), this team has the talents and just enough experience to bring it all home.

QB - McCoy is the man and undisputed leader. Harris will make for a fine #2, I think the best #2 we've had since Chance Mock. End the Chiles QB experiment and use him like Percy Harvin. He'll be spectacular in that role.

RB - Someone here said, bring in the blue-chippers and put them on the field; even if inexperienced, their talents will shine, and they'll perform. Vondrell or Fozzy, one of them will step up. I believe this same concept applies to our secondary as well.

TE - Irby & Ullman, each will do what he does quite well. A very good combination.

WR - Quan & Shipley will be solid. And then there are way too many young studs to not have someone else break out. Sweed was an unknown quantity entering '05 as well. Mathematically speaking, I like our chances of seeing the next Sweed rise to the top in 2008.

OL - Of the five interior linemen (Dockery, Hall, Huey, Tanner, and Burnette), you can't tell me that we won't have three who will build on their experiences and be very good in '08. Us fans on the outside may not know how the snaps will be distributed, but we can expect very good production.
Of the tackles, I think we're still waiting on Ulatoski to assert himself as a top-tier lineman. Health will be key. At the other spot, I like Hix, but what do I know. But that doesn't mean I can't be optimistic.

DE - Most stacked position on the team. Six quality returning players with experience, with Carter & maybe Howard waiting in the wings. (Makes a lot of sense why the top two in-state recruits at this position this year went to OU & LSU, respectively.)

DT - Ironically, thinnest position on the team. But maybe one or two from our army of DE's can slide over on passing downs. Or maybe Humphrey is all that and a can of beans, and can be a solid second-teamer right off the bat. I'm gonna bury my head in my burnt orange haze and say we see no drop-off from the Okam/Lokey combo.

LB - Kindle, Muckelroy, Norton. I've been telling my co-workers forever that these three will rival the Buckeyes LB corps of '05. This year my colleagues we'll see if I'm completely clueless, or got lucky when I bought into the hype machine.

DB - I don't know if we'll ever have a unit like the 2005 group again. Wow, just wow. The 2008 group's recruiting rankings is actually higher than the 2005 group. But the 2005 secondary produced three first-rounders and a second-rounder. Was it a lucky draw, or was it Akina's coaching? If it's the latter, with Coach Akina now going back to DB's full time, it would mean greatness awaits the 2008 group. Either way, it's a pretty safe bet that the 2008 group won't eventually produce three first-rounders. However if it does happen again, we can go ahead and anoint Coach Akina as the greatest college secondary coach of all time. We shall see.

Mack Brown's site says 43 days until kickoff. Let's do this.
