2008 D-Line question

I like the idea of Houston and Ellis sliding down to d-tackle, given their speed and athleticism, but what will happen in short yardage situations when we need a Tubbs/Wright/Okam to plug those holes? This worries me the most because due to our new tackles' size, won't they get pushed off the ball initially?

You are refering to Aaron Lewis moving to DT. Ellis was already at that position. I believe Ellis has already left to pursue his career elsewhere. Roy Miller will start at one DT position. Alexander and Wilcoxon will also get plenty of PT. One of the true freshmen may get some reps also. We are stronger across the DL than anyplace else on this team.

I wouldn't put it past our new DC to recruit a few OL for a defensive jumbo package--we'll see

I am expecting to see some creativity in our planning and execution on the defense.

I think that has some to do with strength as well, not just overall size.

Lokey was probably a little under 300. Okam was much bigger and to me looked like 330 or something at times. He was almost too big to be out there as much as he was. In the NFL a DT needs to be bigger but in college football against spread offenses not so much.

Miller is 300 and can do everything out there that is needed. He has the size to be a hole plugger and the speed and agility to be an effective inside pass rusher. Lewis and Houston are obviously much smaller but Houston is getting to close to the size that Lokey had. I could see him getting around 285.

Alexander is listed at 310 and as mentioned above he has the size to be a run stopper. I would think Wilcoxon has been adding size and should be approaching 300 soon. Humphrey is listed at 290 and is a true frosh. He seems to me to be the guy to be the next Okam type.
