Interesting piece on the Rangers website today - The Link. Summary of the upside and downside risks from both the Texas view and the Atlanta view. This may be a timely thinkpiece, as the trade deadline nears and the Halladay deadline approaches.

I am of the opinion that Mark Teixeira is one of those guys who's just not good for a ballclub. I don't know if "lockerroom cancer" is the right phrase, but I think he brings baggage that will cost his team in the long run, kind of like A-Rod.

I might have traded him for a half-case of Big League Chew and some Gatorade.

While that trade has been awesome from the Ranger perspective (and a disaster for the Braves), my opinion of Tex is considerably better than Texanne's.

If Texas or Atlanta could have counted on Teixeria to be a stalwart bat in the middle of the lineup for 10 years this trade would still be a good one from the Rangers perspective. As things, predictably, turned out, it was one sided for the good guys. Salty is a starting catcher, Harrison is a decent fourth or fifth starter and Andrus is a quality stating shortstop with potential to be an all star. That's worth more than a season and a half of a young Joe DiMaggio and Tex is no Dimaggio.

^And don't forget Neftali Feliz - he may turn out to be the biggest catch of all in this trade. Reports say that he throws a fastball effortlessly at 98 mph, and can touch 101 in spots. As soon as he masters location and control, he will be dynamite in the majors.

And Tex did produce for the Braves while he was in Atlanta - it's the rest of the team that didn't help get them to the postseason. Atlanta probably thought (originally) that because of his ties to Georgia (he played at Georgia Tech), they had a reasonable chance to sign him longterm. When it became apparent the next season that they couldn't, it became a case of "get what you can for him before he can walk away." Hence the trade midseason to the Angels.

Yes, How could I have forgotten Feliz. The Rangers have proven they can spot talent in other organizations' minor league affiliates.
