Remember that time in 2004 when Cal fans were complaining about Texas getting the Rose Bowl bid over their Golden Bears because Mack Brown was ‘whining’ and trying to get the voters to put Texas ahead of Cal and how unfair it all was and then Syntex wrote an awesome post that dissected the rankings data and showed everyone that Cal still didn’t deserve the bid because numbers and then Vince went all VY on Michigan in the Rose Bowl and then Dusty Mangum and everything? Good times.

SF Gate: Texas passes Cal to go to Rose Bowl

“I guess we didn't run up the score at the end, or beg for votes after the game,” Rodgers said, pointedly accusing Texas coach Mack Brown of doing that very thing. “I thought it was (wrong) for coach Brown to beg for votes (on television) after the A&M game.”

Safety Ryan Gutierrez reflected the mood of his teammates.
“We'll take out all our frustrations on the Texas Tech team,” Gutierrez said. “You'll see a team that's extremely pissed off.”

Tech beat Cal 45-31.

I have never waivered in my dislike of Rodgers since that time. What audacity for a player to call out a coach by name like that. Way out of line. I don't recall that he was punished by his own coach in any way. Thanks for re-posting the SynTex article. Gold.

We need to resurrect that thread to explain to everyone whining about us getting into the CFPs over Georgia.. and FSU ..

Horns down doesn't bother me. It's no different than our 'aggy', 'tceh', 'Sand Aggies', 'Cougar High', or any other insult we throw at other schools.

What bothers me is grown-up little *******.

On one level, I have always “hated” Rodgers since then—as a sports figure preference. Sports as entertainment has a melodrama/WWF promotional aspect to it, and we pick heroes and villains to add zing to our sports hobby. He’s not a bad guy at all, and in some ways he is way above average as a basic human being. Heck, I used to “hate” Muhammad Ali, and I didn’t like Danny Ainge etc.

Some sports entertainment figures naturally gravitate to the attention of villainy and controversy. Look at Deion Sanders. Rodgers calling out Mack was really about himself—announcing, by doing an impolite thing “hey, I’m good, I’m willing to be a villain, look at me.” And he is good, he has produced interest and content to watch and read in football, so the sport needs that sort of thing.

The main disconnect is that Aaron wants a sports persona of controversial villain, but simultaneously wants/expects/hopes that he will be adored, and is all sensitive when that doesn’t happen. So, it’s a flaw, but in reality, as a person, I can’t really hate a person for such a minor flaw.

From where I sit it appears that Rodgers is a good guy and a talented QB and has this quirk where any mention of the Texas Longhorns triggers him into being a little *****

We all have traps that we fall into.
