2003 vs. Tech

I still remember that game. I was an usher on the west side (easiest job in the world). I felt sure that we were going to lose. The strange thing was I wasn't happy that we won, I was relieved that we didn't lose. I hated that feeling and felt it way too often back then. 2005 changed all that.

Oh yeah! The game that ended Vince Young's career because he was "benched" when the team needed a quarterback that could throw the ball.

At least that's what an aggy told me.

Tech played a great strategy that day: stop Vince at all costs. They rushed 7 all day long, forcing some bad throws and bad scrambles. He got bailed out by Roy on more than one bad pass.

As our team around Vince bought into his majesty, it became easier and easier to beat teams that tried to do the same as 2003 Tech.

Some things I remember:

- Sloan Thomas had a sick catch in the end zone
- Benson had a nice day as well.
- This assured Carl Reese into retirement
- VY looked great on some plays, clueless on others
- Roy's victory lap around the stadium after the game
- Drizzled the entire game
- Very hungover from celebrating my b-day in Houston the night before

Found this on game recap:

"Texas Tech made one last effort, getting the ball with 46 seconds left and moving 53 yards to the Texas 31-yard line with five seconds remaining. However, a Keith Toogood field goal attempt was wide left and the Longhorns held on for the victory."

Symons had a so-so first half and it looked like we would roll, but he came out on fire in the 2nd half. There was nothing we could do to stop him towards the end of the game, and Tech beat us on some draw runs because we put 7 guys in coverage.

I think BJ Johnson's go-ahead TD came with like 45 seconds left, and Symons STILL marched Tech into FG range for the tie.

Symons done near beat us on a torn ACL, but I think we won because one of the refs made a critical tackle and another made a huge 4th down catch.

Tech had two extra points blocked, while we went for 2 twice and made it both times. So instead of losing 41-42 we won 43-40.

What I remember was we played such poor defense that I thought we had Bobby Jack for DC. They hit hit upright on that last FG or it would've been OT @ 43-43. Hell, the only reason they didn't score a TD is that when we scored we left them like 46 seconds.

I was sure glad to see Robinson / Tomey in '04.

I remember thinking we left too much time on the clock when we scored.  Our defense leaked like a sieve the second half.Man was I relieved when the field goal was no good.

That was among the best seats I ever had at memorial stadium: about the 7th row, 50 yard line. They were my friend's dad's seats. What a great game.

Anyway, with about a minute left in the 2nd quarter, this wheezy old windbag sitting in front of me leans over to his grandson, Spaulding, and says "My god, how long is this damn game going to take?"

The West Side sucks.
