20 recruits

As it stands, most recruiting insiders are saying Texas is recruiting 20 guys + others in the mix -Mike Davis, Darius White, Jackson Jeffcoat and Jordan Hicks.

IF we were to land those 2, that means 24 incoming. This year, we're giving up 15 seniors. That leaves us with 9 slots to account for.

Are there some 2010 commits that are looking likely to change their commitments?

I guess the other possibility are guys quitting the team/transferring.

That difference will come from attrition. The coaches have a good idea of who is thinking about transferring, who may not be cutting it academically, who may be changed to a medical scholarship, etc...

Medical reshirts are not given to underclassmen so schollies are not freed up by a med redshirt. They are available only at the end of an athletes playing time if an injury caused a significant loss of playing time available to the athlete and only under certain circumstances. NCAA has guidelines for allowing added years.

That leaves attrition and greyshirts which I don't fully understand but I think that is where an athlete enrolls but is not on scholarship until until the following year (counts against the next year's limit).

Most of the speculation I've seen is about WRs transferring out. Earl Thomas may declare early.

any speculation as to who is quitting/transferring? When do they typically give word on that?

I'm sure recruits at this point have to be wondering who is leaving before they commit.

I am not looking at the left over schollies given out at the end of last year but that will be a wash regardless when they graduate.

I show:
14 - Senior
19 - Juniors
19 - Sophomores
9 - RS Frosh
20 - HS Frosh

Total = 67 (minus seniors)
Open spots for next year = 18 (85-67)

We currently have 21 incoming and 18 open spots. So that leaves currently 3 spots that will be lost due to attrition from now until September. If we take 1 or 2 more then that could grow to 5. We generall lose about 3-4 each year due to playing time issues (thus transfer out), grades, or medical issues. Irby is looking more and more like a medical hardship. We could lose a player early.

Last year we lost Webber (5/09), Marshall (8/09), Wilcoxon (8/09), McGaskey (5/09), Humphrey. Webber and McGaskey had playing time issues. Wilcoxon, Marshall, Humphrey had medical issues. So we lost 5 last year due to these various issues.
