Per Rivals almost 1/5th of the top 100 players in the nation (actually 17) are from Florida. This seems a bit fishy.

I know that these lists are best guess, but I find it hard to believe that 1/5th of the best players are from one state.

Certainly makes it easier for Florida to get high ratings in recruiting.

Here are some numbers from USA Today for what they are worth. Per this link, for NFL players drafted since 1988, the state breakdown by high school is as follows:

California......745
Texas...........624
Florida..........583
Total...........5778

If you limit to just players selected in the first round, interestingly, Florida does come out on top. However, the percentage is more like 11 to 14% depending on the round.

State..........1st Round...........2nd Round..........3rd Round
California....87.......................80.......................81
Texas.........59.......................67.......................77
Florida........92.......................74........................82
Total.........661........................673.....................710

Here is the list since 2000. The percentage gets up to 15% of Florida high schoolers going in the 1st round.

State..........All Rnds...1st Round...........2nd Round..........3rd Round
California....330.............33.......................38.....................46
Texas.........280.............30.......................37.....................35
Florida........275.............47........................35....................41
Total.........2537.............317.....................318...................340

Overall, 20% still seems high to me. However, it is not as ridiculous as I suspected when I started this little exercise.

I believe there were only 3 five-star players from Texas this year.

Maybe this was a bit of a down year for really top shelf talent or maybe the rankings are off.

A lot of this is artificial and a big guess as no one can measure heart and future growth and teachability, at least not accurately. Texas getting so many of the best Texas kids is great.

I remember the days when we might get one out of the top 10 players in Texas.

This year's Pro Bowl had 8 former Miami Hurricanes (Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Vince Wilfork, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Brandon Meriweather, Bryant McKinnie, Jonathan Vilma, Frank Gore, and Antrel Rolle). If I am not mistaken, they were all first round draft picks except for Gore. Michigan is next with 6 and Texas is third with 4. I think there is something to the top-end college players coming from the state of Florida.
