2 plays = 2 "Oh, COME ON, ref!!"

  1. The ref didn't run up late, he was standing there with a perfect view. Yet, no Horse Collar call. reedicculus!
  2. I know I could be nitpicking here, but the penalty was Unsportsmanlike Conduct "after the play was ruled dead." It took Schooler less than 1.5 seconds to make the tackle from the time the whistle first made a sound. What was he supposed to do – drop him mid-air?

Recognized both at the time and agree with your assessment of both.
The first was completely blown, and the second improperly described/justified.

Former HS ref here, and I agree as to first one that was clearly dangerous and could have ended a season. The second call though is the right one, you cant body slam a player down, period, there is a reason three different officials threw their flags immediately. I know it was bang bang but it was a body slam and that is a flag every single time, though I will concede it should have been described better.

So the solution to the body slam, which I saw on other plays (not flagged) is for the player to hold the RB until a much bigger player slams into him at full speed. Not sure the alternative is better.

I think some of you may be missing the point on #2.
The issue isn't whether body slamming should be a penalty ....but the penalty assessed, as described, was..as Godz quoted...Schooler was penalized for an act after the play was dead....which is the point in question.
If they penalized him for slamming... fine....if it was considered too late of an action and therefore warranting.....no, disagree.

I was fine with the Schooler call. The whistle was for stopped forward progress, so saying "after the play was ruled dead" is just semantics at that point. Any body slam is unsportsmanlike conduct. Doesn't matter if it's mid-play or not. So the question shouldn't be whether or not Schooler should have dropped him mid-air... it should be why Schooler felt the need to pick him up in the first place. Being upset about the description of the play being dead wouldn't have changed the ball placement or outcome.

The horse collar was kind of... close? The call was designed for tackling/dragging from it, not "pushing the runner off-balance" from it. It kind of looked like he got the inside of the right shoulder and just jerked him off balance. I didn't mind the non-call, but if it wasn't a TD, I probably would have minded it more.
