2/15 Bracketology: Not much new

If that is our destiny, you probably won't hear too many complaints from around here.

We appear to be a solid #2 at this point. We should have some cushion between us and those 3 seeds.

Reliant Stadium suuuuuuuuure would be fun on the second weekend.

Neither does Memphis, they are the Hawaii of basketball right now. If this ends up being the bracket I am investing in Final Four tickets early!!!

Not so fast there...

Two games in LR with that bracket, as I believe KH pointed out, puts both the Memphis and local contingents against Texas in the first two rounds. It'll be like playing two road games.

Memphis is the Hawaii of basketball?!?! Wow. Can you explain why you think that is? And what does Memphis have to do, and who does Memphis has to beat (and by how much) to be taken seriously?

Bob, true. It shouldn't matter in the first round but definitely could in the second round. Plus, while UT would have more fans at Reliant, don't underestimate the number of fans Memphis would bring. They are crazy nuts for Tiger basketball.

I definitely wouldn't compare them to Hawaii as they were a team lacking size and athleticism with a system that generated wins over poor competition.

Mephis is a team without a system that plays "willy nilly" and beats teams with superior athleticism and size.

I'd say they are actually complete opposites but I see your point as both teams have ***** scheds and a big weakness that tends to not allow teams to compete when it comes to championships.

I didn't really mean willy nilly in a bad way. Texas' offense has a touch of that. Not many sets. Their talent is good enough, they don't usually need them.

I'm just saying that (and I've been burned multiple times picking them to go to the FF) their offense can be stopped by disciplined, well coached teams and they generally struggle from the outside and from the FT line so I never think they will get past the elite 8.

That said, I wouldn't want to play them but I'd rather play them then UNC, Duke, or KU again.

I'm going to try not to get bent out of shape by that "Georgetown had to cheat to beat Nova" comment. Even if the ref messed up that call, don't blame the Hoyas for it. They didn't blow the whistle.

As for whether Georgetown or Texas is the better 2 seed, it's close.

GU has 3 losses, all on the road, all to RPI top-20 teams. It has one RPI top-20 win, UConn, at home.

Texas has four losses, 3 to RPI top-25 teams (Wisconsin at home) and that stinker at Mizzou. It has four RPI top-25 wins (including 3 in the top 10).

So, Texas has better wins but worse losses. Take the Mizzou game out of the equation, and Texas is competing for a 1 seed. Both teams have some real tests ahead of them, so it'll sort itself out. I think Texas has shown it can play at a higher level than GU so far, but they seem to be less consistent. Honestly, both teams are fully capable of reaching the Final Four ... or losing in the second round.

If you would have told me at the beginning of the year that we would half to wait half of the season to see Gary Johnson, and almost another 1/4th for him to be effective, I would have never believed we would be a 2 seed.

That is outstanding, and I think very realistic if we win every game we are favored in for the rest of the regular season, or even if we drop one.

guys, we're not a lower 2 than anyone necessarily

we're simply being placed in the Houston bracket...where we actually lie in the "S curve" is irrelevant

Well, I'm not a big fan of John Calipari -- he strikes me as the Barry Switzer of college basketball -- but let's give credit where credit is due. This Memphis squad is frightening. I think they are easily the best team in the country. Their athleticism is off the charts, they have good size, and they have done something Calipari's teams never seem to do, which is buy into a "system" (of sorts). They're playing with a surprising lack of selfishness.

I think they'd torch us. I think UNC would handle us too, mostly because of Tyler Hansbrough, but Memphis would be an even worse matchup. We could probably deal with Duke a little easier, because they wouldn't pressure our "big" men as much, but I honestly think KU would be the easiest #1 matchup for the 'horns, even though it's tough to consistently beat a top team multiple times.
