2:03:02 Boston Marathon

I think that's a record.

Wonder when the first sub-2:00 marathon will be. You gotta think it's coming. That'll be a hell of a milestone.

Incredible accomplishment, fastest marathon ever recorded. World records aren't kept, though, because every marathon course is different.

Actually, according to one article I read today, there is an official world record for the marathon, but today's Boston time won't be eligible for it, as the Boston course has a net elevation drop of something like 400 to 500 feet...and to qualify for the record a runner must win on a course that has a drop of something like less than 130 feet.

Barry, the elevation requirement is right on. In reality though, because of the hilly course Boston is traditionally a slower marathon.

The other reason why the time won't be an official all-time best (as opposed to"World Record") is because there was a strong tailwind yesterday. That probably was a bigger factor in his time than the course.

Regardless of the course or the wind...that still was an amazing accomplishment. I think of the World Marathon Majors as a Tour De France myself and love watching the big ones.

I saw that one of the mile splits was 4:21 or 4:22. To put that in perspective, that would put you in the state finals (boys HS) for the 1600m most years, and would be good for about 6th in the Texas Relays this year.

I remember 10 x 65 sec 400 was a decent workout in HS for quarter milers. Can you imagine running 105 of those at that pace??

I agree...I kept wondering when the group of Heartbreak Hills was going to come up. I finally asked a fellow runner and he said, "oh, they were about 2 miles back!"
I personally like hilly courses, esp when running a marathon because it uses so many different leg muscles than a flat run.

I wonder what some of the Boston folks would think of training on 281 or 360 during the summer!
Still, kudos to the guy, that is damn speedy on any course.

****, Here I am thinking me walking 5 miles in 1 hour and 47 minutes was a good time this previous weekend at the March for Babies.
