as part of relocating the university's tennis facilities and constructing new grad student housing, the regents are set to approve today the construction of a new 2,000 car parking garage between disch-falk field and i35. this construction will necessitate cutting down dozens of old, beautiful live oaks that are now in the existing surface parking lot. also lost will be the numerous, pleasant tailgating spots used by ut baseball fans. this destruction is yet another consequence of the mistake of locating the new dell medical school where it's being built. the university's facilities personnel are pushing "densification" of the campus.

Oh, I'm sure the live oaks will be relocated as this has been the long time practice of the University. Fans will adjust and find new places to tailgate.

Now if we could only relocate the State Cemetery for a new 18,000 seat basketball arena! ;)

Nah, to save money Patterson would just build over the cemetary and charge the dead folk for tickets...maybe at a reduced rate.

Is the yellow area along a stretch of Comal represent pedestrian crossing or is it to be a closed roadway?

Hey, wait just a minute - the new basketball arena will have to go somewhere else. That cemetery is destined to be moved so a new Quidditch Field can be built there. After all, UT has a NC team worthy of a new stadium.

Wooster,

Remember when Frank Erwin used imminent domain to "seize that historic neighborhood"? All the protests, threats, name calling. That was a blighted area, but you would have thought they were seizing and tearing down Stephen F Austin's original homestead.

I can't imagine grad students wanting to live there, but it's closer than some other properties. like Research

Oh yeah, that was a ugly firestorm over razing that dump. Erwin was threatened and called every name in the book.

I suspect the new parking facility, tennis courts and grad housing will require that a bunch of very large and old trees will have to be cut down. How do you suspect that is going to go over with the students and environmentalist when they get wind of it?

As I recall, Frank wanted to go all the way to Chestnut, and them go South across 19th Street. Their objection caused it to cut back to Comal - at least I don't think The University went farther east.

Those people would raise hell over cutting the grass if they thought they could get attention.

Do remember Jones Ramsey's reply when one of the liberal reporters quizzed him on the large amount of electricity Memorial Stadium used lighting night games? "I suspect a lot less than all those people would be using if they were home with the lights, TV. and AC on".

I have discussed this on a different thread. I will be brief. I quite recently spent 3 years as a UT grad student. There is no f*&%ing demand for on campus grad school housing. People aged 22+ do not want to be subject to dorm style rules that apply to all university housing. There is plentiful housing for grad students in all prices near campus. I cannot imagine there are even 100 grad students interested in this.

Private companies have built a million new apartments in west campus, east of 35 and downtown, and north of campus. Even more are on the way.

The amount of building projects over the past 7 years at UT has been insane. I never questioned them until this proposed grad school housing. Now I wonder if someone is getting a kickback and that is why we have constant building projects. An honest regent really needs to review every university contract.

Just using your kickback line as a jab at Beaumont ISD, which has been taken over by the state, with indictments, convictions and jail time for some former high ranking employees and one or more contractors. Emphasis on the "former" not being voluntary.

Hmmmm. Well it was just a line. I don't do any law except state income./ franchise, and controversy, admin law hearing& appeals, merger/acquisitions, and proactive planning.

Well the new board of regents made it harder for regents to see university records.... so we are going in the wrong direction under the new regents. The crazy thing is the regents just voted to make their one job harder for themselves.
