10th Anniversary of 'The Big Lebowski'

What is, Mac?

I'm thinking that "its generation" is probably the 20-35 demographic, of which I'm a member. I would say that limits the "generation" to the past 15 years, which leaves us with Dumb and Dumber, a lot of Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, and Chris Farley, the newer Apatow stuff. None of those compare to the kind of adoration Lebowski receives, IMO. I rarely go more than a couple of days without hearing a Lebowski quote or reference and it's spawned biannual festivals on the level of Star Trek conventions. It my be reflective of a poor era of comedy but I can't think of anything else that compares from the early 90's onward.

Number of times in the movie we see The Dude throw a bowling ball? Zero.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure if we ever see Walter roll either.

Am I the only one bothered by these fancy cases? I like all my DVDs to sit uniformly on my shelf, and now I feel I can't buy this one because it's in a friggen bowling ball

sweetness.

I first saw this movie sitting in a dorm room at Jester my first week into college. What a fitting way to start things off.

1) I first saw "The Big Lebowski" in the first months or two after I moved to LA in the fall of 1998.I didn't know the city, didn't totally relate to the stoner aspect, and saw it on about a 13" TV.

I thought it was OK, but not that great.

I next saw the movie about 2 1/2 to 3 years later after I had:
-Been unemployed for over half the time I'd lived in LA
-Participated in (and won) a bowling league of LA Texas Exes
-Slept until noon many days
-Not gotten out of my pajamas many days
-Shopped at the Ralphs in the movie's opening sequence (with my own Ralphs card)
-Could relate to having to write a check for $0.69 (or whatever it was)

I truly appreciated that The Dude was L-A-Z-Y

If you liked "The Big Lebowski" (i.e. what if detective Philip Marlowe were a stoner), you might try "The Long Goodbye" (i.e. what if Philip Marlowe were dropped into '70s LA).

Macanudo, you're out of your element...softlynow, the Princess Bride is not the issue here.

I did leave Office Space off my list of possible funniest movies of this generation, which was an oversight, but I certainly don't think it's popularity ranks anywhere near the Lebowski phenomenon. Princess Bride is a classic and has a similar cult following but as some on born in 1981 I can safely say that it's not from the Lebowski generation. Probably about 10 years too early.

I remember watching Lebowski in the movie theatre the first time. I remember laughing my *** off.....I was 21. Ten years later down the road....I think I have watched it 20-25 times. Sometime en mass, sometimes solo, all the time laughing and seeing new **** come to light.

One of the best movies ever made. Simple, original, and full of unique characters with well defined simple traits.

John Goodman should have won an Academy Award for Walter.
