10 yrs of Friendship - My dog

10 yrs ago today I found a dog on the corner of 2nd and Pleasant Valley (east side). He was about 3 months old, had mange, worms, fleas, ticks, a huge sore on his back right hip and was bone thin. My roommate and I picked him up and took him to a vet. The vet ran tests and gave us meds, telling me I needed to keep the dog away from other dogs for 3 weeks until it was healthy. I left him with my neighbors for 4 days during Spring Break and when I got home, they told me they named him Duke. "Fine, I'm not keeping him" was my reply. Easter weekend I ended up taking the dog to my parents and he lived there for a year. He's been with me ever since. He's been there for everything, girls, moves, marriage, roommates, ups, downs, and all the in-between. He's lived in Dallas, Austin, NYC and spent a good deal of time in Houston. He's flown from DFW to JFK and then he's been part of a cross country drive from NYC back to Dallas. He's been in the snow of Central Park and the sands of Crystal Beach (1 month before Ike). We have a bond that I can't describe, but everyone can see. I don't have to talk to him, just look and he seems to know what I'm thinking. It's amazing to look back and think of all the stuff we've done together. My wife wishes he could talk b/c of all the things he would have to say. It's amazing and I remember picking him up like it was yesterday.

Just wanted to share...

how awesome how a mangy pooch can turn into a beautiful dog with the care of a good owner. kudos to you, man.

Duke is a beautiful dog, and never believe for one minute that he doesn't know that he's a lucky dog, too. You're a good man for taking him to the vet, and an even better one for keeping him and giving him the loving home he deserved!

I second the cuteness of the snow booties!

Good on you for giving him a home. I'm convinced pretty much any dog will become that type of companion if properly cared for and loved.

Nice post. Good looking dog. It is cool that you have a bond like that with your him. Dogs really can be mans best friend. In an interesting coincidence, I just passed the 10 year mark with my dog, a Rhodesian who is also named Duke.

thanks for the replies. he truly is a cool dog. i'm lucky to work from home and have him around all day.

he's got a spot on his tongue, so i tend to hear chow a lot. other than that, i have no idea what he is. has a husky coat that loves to shed.

I guess that is a great story- however, it would be much better if the owner was a Baylor Bear

Was he witness to the used toothbrush, milk and donuts NYC story our good friend BD was involved in?

Hope the birthday was a gem, drinks post-wedding shower were a good time.

um... who is this? JH?

and yes, he was witness to the awesomeness that was that night (almost exactly 3 yrs ago). thanks for reminding me of it. too funny. he's been witness to a lot in our time together.

bday was great.

Yes, it is JH. Everytime I hear that New York story I crack up. You and BD might have to tell it again a few weeks from now at the bachelor party.
