10 Cent Beer Night - June 4, 1974

I was born and raised in Arlington and consider myself a fairly big Texas Rangers fan...

Until yesterday, I had never heard of the fiasco that occurred 34 years ago at Cleveland Municipal Stadium known as "10 Cent Beer Night."

I thought I'd post a brief version for those who were not around during that time or had never heard the story. Unbelievable.

To a slightly lesser extent, this is why the old Soap Creek Saloon dropped "tequila night," where they sold shots with a lime and salt shaker for 20 cents, every Thursday, I believe, while it lasted. Got a bit crazy.

What the story didn't say is that Indians players themselves charged right field with bats -- to beat the drunken fans. One of them is even reported to have handed a bat to Burroughs, saying, "Here, use this!"

I was 14. My family had gone to the beer night in Arlington and were listening on the radio to beer night in Cleveland. It was an unbelieveable turn of events and marked, I believe, the decline of Western Civilization.

Basically giving away beer at a ballpark...hmmm, I doubt if the fans would actually get drunk and disorderly. Yeah, that's a great idea.

Sounds like times have changed quite a bit. Now there are alcohol curfews at many sporting events. I know that at Stars games they stop selling alcohol towards the end of the game.
