1 Weekend in DC

So I'm visiting a friend in Virginia, but we'll be spending one weekend in D.C. I've never been there before. What would you recommend?

I am definitely making a stop at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, but other than that I have nothing planned.

Are any of the Universities (American, Georgetown) cool?

I'm into live music, computer programming, coffee shops, good food, philosophy, and beer. What do you got for me?

Smithsonian American History museum is closed until next summer. Try Air and Space.

Call your Senator's office and ask for a Capitol tour (you will avoid the long lines for the public tour) if you get there on a weekday.

Georgetown the area of DC is cool, but the campus is meh. Clydes for crabcake sammich. (Clyde's happy hour menu name was the inspiration for the Starlight Vocal Band's song "Afternoon Delight")

Brickskeller for large beer selection.
RFD also good beer selection an it's in Chinatown
Tune Inn (capitol hill) for dive bar atmosphere - good burgers and cheap beer (miller high life pitchers) and you might see Ralph Hall there hanging out
Ebenezer's over by Union Station for coffee and maybe live music
for food, try Old Ebbitt Grill by the White House. good raw bar and oldest saloon in DC

Old Post Office Pavilion has a tower view that's comparable to that of the Washington Monument, and it requires no wait in line for tickets.

Politics and Prose might have something going on that could be construed as philosophy. and they have coffee.

not sure what your price range/preference is, so try washingtonian.com for restaurant recs.

To echo the above, if you really are into beer, Brickskeller and/or RFD are a must. If you can only make one, do Brickskeller.

And I liked the Natural History Museum, but I like big rocks.

Personally, I got more out of spending quiet time at the Lincoln, WWII, Korean War/Vietnam Memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, and the like than I did from displays at the museums. But that may just be me.

930 club is great. Also, The Birchmere in Alexandria is probably my favorite, most consistent, venue. Never seen a bad show. Lots of styles, but I have seen Joe Ely, Kelly Willis, Jack Ingram, Richard Thompson, Bob Schneider, Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, among others.

Thought one of the best things we did was hit the lincoln memorial, Korean War memorial and vietnam veterans memorial at night. We did it at 10pm and walked to the Washington Monument, but anytime after rush hour and things have quieted down is very moving.
