03/14 Kirk Bohls on Coach G

Good assessment from Bohls, in particular the comparison with the Ags and others. Intersting that Blair's results weren't as good as GG's even with the Texas connection that she lacked.

I can't stand Bohls and think most of his columns are drivel and show no insight into the program he covers. I'm shocked that I agree with everyone of his points on the women's basketball program. Did anyone else wonder if he got the idea for his material from this board with respect to a comparison of coaches. It's interesting that earlier in the year he was calling her out for her $1 million salary and then a week after someone posts a coach comparison he's reversed course.

110% agree with making the WNIT being better for the team than the NCAAs.

love/hate with Bohls. he made a crazy prediction earlier that Coach G would return back to the ACC if certain openings were to occur.

I stand by my positions about the direction of this program.

And I think the NIT will be better for the Horns in gaining valuable tourney experience. I'm sure no one wants to see another BLOWOUT done to the Horns. Snicker

Upsets occur all the time in the NCAA tourney. Who's to say we couldn't pull one if we get invited? it's all about matchups. The risk/reward is much greater than "hoping" for an NIT bid.

I agree with Moooooo, upsets do happen, and there really isn't any downside if we're fortunate enough to get an invite. If we lose early it won't be a surprise based on our seeding, and if we pull off an upset it can only help.

If Texas gets in they are probably looking at an 11 seed. That is a first round against a 6 seed, or roughly someone in the lower part of the top 25. That is not a sure win for this team, but is certainly possible. A second game would be with a 3 seed, which is still outside the top 8 and a game they are capable of winning when they play to their potential.

I think that is the argument for having them in the tournament. If you look closely you see a team that is in no way a NC contender, but a team that is also capable of being in the Sweet 16. I think results would have shown that if they had not spent so much of the season playing teams who are NC contenders. There is a huge gap between the top and the middle of the top 25.

Of course, a first round game against a top 25 team could also get them a one-and-done. I’m taking about what is possible – not making a prediction. It clearly would require back-to-back upsets.

As to the WNIT – I think one consideration would be the health of the team. I heard someone say that as soon as the season was over there would be three surgeries. I didn’t get to ask questions so I’m not sure who or what. My assumptions would be Kat/nose, and AT/Thumb as two of them. I have no idea about the third.

And, you have to consider the buy-in from the team. There is no point in playing WNIT games unless the team is excited to play more. Is that what they would want? Kristin came back mid-season after already walking away from the game once. Kat has a significant injury that needs to heal. AT has a significant injury that needs to heal. Apparently someone else has a significant injury that I don’t know about. Pretty much everyone has to be tired from playing so many minutes for so long. I’m not saying they shouldn’t play, or that they will not, or that they don’t want to. I just think it is a fair question.

Upsets do happen all the time but the likelihood of upsets actually happening have something to do with preparation and demonstrating some ability to make that happen in the regular season. This team has had multiple opportunities against Top 25 caliber competition to pull an upset and only once, against Tech, did it happen. If we get the invite to the NCAA great, I'm not hoping for a WNIT bid but I think there could be a silver lining in it. Baylor used a successful WNIT bid to build their program and won a National Championship with players that had been to the WNIT.

You have two players on your entire roster that have a post-season win. Those two players graduate this year. You go to the WNIT if invited regardless of team health or other concerns.

My biggest concern for a while has been if we have the right assistants in place. I had never heard of LaKale Malone until she was hired here. Whether or not she has met/surpassed expectations, I have no idea.

I'd really like to know who our ace recruiter is among the staff members. When Coach Conradt hired Karen Aston toward the end of her tenure at Texas, our fortunes turned around when it came to recruiting. Perhaps that type of change will come, if necessary.

I would think that each position coach is responsible for recruiting that position with Coach G serving as the closer.

Certainly, I have seen Coach Hughey talking to potential post recruits at the summer camp.

As for your original question, Moo. I don't know who advised her to do a clean sweep but I was really pulling for Coach Mays to be retained. A couple of us talked to him right after Coach G was hired and while she was in the process of speaking to the then current staff and deciding who, if any, to retain. He certainly seemed to want to stay. I think he would have been great working with our guards.

I don't think there is as much turnover in WBB's staff unless an assistant wants to move up or on. Of our current staff, I put Coach Malone and Coach Hughey in that category of likely wanting to be a head coach at some point. No particular reason for that other than both seem to be driven and have shown that they are willing to move to advance their careers.

I don't really know if certain assistants have more recruiting responsibilities than others; there are so many different facets to the process my guess is everyone is involved to a pretty significant degree. And BabHorn is right, each case is different, so different coaches might take the lead depending on who we're going after.

It was probably best for Travis to be let go upfront. Otherwise he would have been the first to have been let go after the performance failed on the court. Trying to find a job after a head coach change is easier to explain than trying to find one after being dismissed following couple of suckie seasons

At the Coach G Show, GG indicated that GV and all the other asst. coaches did initial contacts, and then she (GG) closed the deal....

W/ Kayla B, it was Hughey she contacted...

"a couple of suckie seasons"--really?

which ones qualify as suckie? I can't think of one of the past four that qualifies for that description, assuming one is being realistic and not thinking that "We're Texas" automatically means skipping the rebuilding process.

Other than bringing in new staff during transitions, you don't hear of basketball teams replacing assistants very often (except when they're moving up to a HC position elsewhere). I'm sure it happens but I don't think it's a common occurence in either men's or women's college BB. Of course I don't follow the men's game very closely so could be wrong there!

What I find interesting is the continued use of the phrase 'rebuilding process.' The most significant problem on the floor even before the coaching change was not the pieces but rather that, all too often, those pieces refused, for whatever reason, to work together AS A TEAM.

Then once the coaching change took place, it seemed as though nothing was being done to maximize the performance to get them to gell AS A TEAM. Further, it seemed as though players who could have provided a better showing on the floor than those IN the game were left sitting on the bench (although again, this is not unique to the Goestenkors era).

How about “transition period”?

I believe there were some team chemistry issues before GG was hired. (I’m not blaming that on Coach Conradt, just saying what I believe to be true.) Since Coach G was hired there has been a natural transition period in which players came from two groups, recruited by two different coaching staffs. I’m not aware of any significant chemistry issues since then, but perfect harmony would not be what I expected. My perception of this season has been that this group played much more as a unit than for a number of years previous. In fact it is one of the signs of progress that I have seen. Just my opinion.

I’m not sure who you think should have played more. But, I am curious about who and why.
