I'm done with Tim Beck

IT says
-- the 10th assistant will be on the offense,
-- will likely be the play caller, and
-- might have Co-OC title.

Also Herman is not in a hurry. "This will be a robust search"

Here is the idea with Beck, as they see it

This will free up Tim Beck to hit the road hard. Beck has a good reputation in this regard. As I stated when he was hired, he's more of the point man on recruits than the closer. He isn't the reason Ohio State landed Baron Browning and Jeffrey Okudah, but he served as a great introduction to Ohio State. He's already done the same at Texas with Cameron Rising and Casey Thompson. He was the set-up man for Urban Meyer and I believe will look to serve the same role for Herman.

Mehringer started following Brian Wright, the Toledo OC

Toledo was #9 in total offense in 2017 (509.9 yards per game)
#11 in scoring (39.2 points per game)
#16 in passing (291.9 yards)
#24 rushing (218.0 yards)

Good stats for 2016 as well
Playing in the MAC
They even go by "UT"

Prior to coming to Toledo, Wright coached at Florida Atlantic for four seasons as the Owls’ offensive coordinator. Wright stepped in as interim head coach for the final four games of the 2013 season, leading the Owls to four consecutive victories and bowl eligibility (6-6) for the first time since 2008. FAU outscored its last four opponents, 151-40, and averaged 428.8 yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Jaquez Johnson earned Conference USA Newcomer of the Year and set the then-school record for total offense.

Besides Helfrich and Wright, here are a couple more names from double agent Chip Brown

Brad Cornelsen, Virginia Tech offensive coordinator
Virginia Tech's power spread offense averaged 28.2 points per game (69th in FBS) in 2017 with redshirt freshman QB Josh Jackson after a record-setting season in 2016 with QB Tyrod Evans in which the Hokies averaged 35 points per game. Before that, Cornelsen oversaw the offense at Memphis under Justin Fuente, including the development of 2-star QB Paxton Lynch into a first-round NFL draft pick.

Graham Harrell, North Texas offensive coordinator
Before hiring Tim Beck, Tom Herman attempted to hire OU's Lincoln Riley, a descendant of Mike Leach's Air Raid. Harrell, another Air Raid descendant, oversaw a UNT offense in 2017 that averaged 35.5 points per game in 2017 (No. 20 in FBS) with 291.9 yards passing (No. 21 in FBS) and 162.9 yards rushing (No. 67). The former Texas Tech quarterback joined Seth Littrell's staff at UNT before the 2016 season, and his offense saw the 11th-best turnaround in the nation, scoring 9.6 points per game more than it did in 2015.

I would take Kendall Briles before I would think about Graham Harrell or Cornelson, neither of whom calls plays, not to mention other issues.

Todd Dodge is a great football mind and developer of talent. He is not a recruiter. I like Todd, helped recruit him, but his personality is just different, not bad, but frequently misconstrued.

this is an honest question about how the coaches (Herman and Beck) see it...But what does this mean about coaching? Doesn't a guy who gets to the OC role see himeself as more than a set up recruiter? Herman obviously likes Beck to bring him over...what does Herman think about Beck's career progression?

sabre, do you let go of a guy you like go rather than demote and keep him?

Out placement is a wonderful thing, unless you are Mack Brown, in which case you flip the ultimatum and fire his counterpart as a distraction. That one I predicted a couple of months in advance.

I'm impressed with these stats. Hope TH gives him serious consideration.

Another name in the hat

60 year old Noel Mazzone who has worked with Tommy Tuberville (Ole Miss, 1995; Auburn, 1999), Dennis Erickson (Oregon State, 2002; ASU 2010), Chuck Amatoat NC St (where Mazzone was QB and WRs coach and worked with Philip Rivers, Ed Orgeron(Ole Miss, 2005), WR coach for the NY Jets (with Eric Manginiin, 2006), Jim Mora (UCLA 2012), and Kevin Sumlin (aggy 2016-17)

So are we just speculating here (too lazy to re-read the thread)? Is there any real indication that Herman is actively looking to make this move and bring in an new OC?

The thought of Mazzone is totally underwhelming

The only one of his employers that I give any credibility is Tuberville. He had nothing to do with play calling or the development of Rivers, that was all Chuckster. The fact that he worked not once but TWICE for that total piece of **** Erickson should ban him from entering Travis County.

The names being thrown out are extremely troublesome.

I was aware of the 10th coach having read it earlier on the thread; my question was really based on the OC idea. That would be a big move. Adding a position coach or QC not so much in terms of news and and impact.

Ok, just saying, isn't it a little early to give Tim Beck the GDGD treatment? Let him "screw up" for at least two seasons before everyone hangs him in effigy.....GDGD had Applewhite as a redshirt frosh and some running back who may have won some awards and mayyybeee played in the NFL for a couple of seasons while perhaps toking a bit....

Hang him in effigy? The hell with that! Let's just hang him right there in Austin!
